Subject to demand, the following pre-conference workshop will be offered on Monday 22 October:

 

Topic:                         Improving Institutional Effectiveness Through Surveys

 

Presenter:                 Dr John Muffo,

                                    Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

 

Target Participants: Anyone with little formal training in survey research.

WORKSHOP PLAN

 

The workshop will commence at 10.00am on Monday, 22nd October 2001 and conclude around 4.00pm on the same day at Swinburne Sarawak Institute of Technology, Kuching, Malaysia.  The workshop will cover most aspects of planning and conducting an effective survey, including:

 

·                                                         Selecting a sample

·                                                         Writing questions

·                                                         Mechanics of conducting a survey

·                                                         Ensuring a high response rate

·                                                         Processing results

·                                                         Assessing reliability and validity

·                                                         Critiquing surveys

 

The workshop will focus primarily on printed surveys, but survey techniques such as computerized surveys, telephone surveys and focus groups will be discussed.  Printed references and useful web sites are provided as well.  “Hands-on” exercises are included and participants are requested, if possible, to bring examples of surveys on overheads for sharing with others and critiquing.
