Compulsory Subjects / Mata Pelajaran Wajib (MPW)
It is a requirement by the Ministry of Higher Education under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act, 1996 (Act 555) that all Malaysian students must take the units and pass as a prerequisite for the award of certificate, diploma and degree.

| 1 | Foundation students: You must take the MPW units in your Foundation year. |
| 2 | Diploma & Degree students: You must pass all the MPW units in order to graduate with a Diploma or Degree. |
Note: Compulsory units (such as Tamadun Islam / Asas Pengajian Malaysia and Ethnic Relations) taken at Public Universities / IPTA (Institute Pengajian Tinggi Awam) are not equivalent to MPW units offered by IPTS like Swinburne. Therefore Malaysian students who have transferred from IPTA are still required to take and pass the MPW units.
