The Master of Arts (TESOL) program is designed to meet the demand by degree holders for a postgraduate program in TESOL.

This program aims to facilitate the development of disciplinary knowledge in the area of second language acquisition, as well as in the area of teaching English to speakers of other languages; equip prospective teachers with the basic tools for classroom practice in the area of TESOL; explore current theories and pedagogy in second /foreign language teaching; investigate classroom issues related to teaching TESOL; critique second /foreign language teaching methodologies; identify research trends in the field of teaching English as a second/foreign language; enable students to understand a range of methods used in TESOL research; and allow students to undertake a project which applies research skills to the field of learning and teaching English as a second and/or foreign language.

The Master of Arts (TESOL) is a three-tiered program that allows students to pursue the program in three stages:

Stage 1: Postgraduate Certificate of Arts (TESOL)
The Postgraduate Certificate of Arts (TESOL) will introduce students to essential knowledge of language skills and a variety of methods and approaches to build a foundation for teaching English effectively. This will help develop their critical and problem-solving skills on issues and problems in the field and improve the students’ ability to identify learning needs, and to plan and manage change.

Stage 2: Postgraduate Diploma of Arts (TESOL)
The Postgraduate Diploma of Arts (TESOL) develops and extends the knowledge and skills learned at the Postgraduate Certificate level. At this level, students will demonstrate an increasing capability to teach English, assess and evaluate methods of teaching different skills of English and contribute effectively to the teaching profession.

Stage 3: Master of Arts (TESOL)

Graduates will show creativity and adaptability in the application of knowledge and skills to a variety of situations, to solve complex problems, and to think systematically, reflectively and independently.

Students enter the program at Stage 1 (Postgraduate Certificate) and progress through to Stage 2 (Postgraduate Diploma) and Stage 3 (Master’s level). Progression from one stage to the next will be dependent on the successful completion of the previous stage.

Each stage comprises four units of study, each worth 12.5 credit points. To be eligible for the award of the Master of Arts (TESOL), a student will need to complete satisfactorily a total of 150 credit points.

The duration of study is one-and-a-half years for full-time or equivalent part-time. Full-time students will undertake four units of study per term or eight units per year whereas part-time students may take two units per term.

Each term consists of 12 weeks and there are two terms per year. Each unit consists of three contact hours per week. In addition to formal class time, students are expected to participate in peer teaching sessions to give them an opportunity to experiment with language teaching techniques and critically evaluate them, as well as conduct real-life classroom teaching for the relevant, practical units of the program.
