Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus
Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak (SUTS) is a Foreign BranchCampus University (FBCU) set up in partnership between the State Government of Sarawak and Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. The establishment of SUTS is part of a long-term strategy by the Sarawak Government to provide Malaysian students with international living, working and learning opportunities.
SUTS was formerly known as Swinburne Sarawak Institute of Technology which was established by the then Federal Minister of Education, Dato Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak in 1999 who in 2009, became Prime Minister. In June 2004, SUTS was created a fully fledged university by the Ministry of Higher Education.
SUTS currently occupies the Kompleks Negeri (State Complex) at Jalan Simpang Tiga in the State capital, Kuching. The campus can accommodate between 5-7000 students, the population in September 2009 being 3000, growing at approximately 20% p.a. 18% of students were international coming from 39 countries. As of September 2009 the university had approximately 250 staff and 45 vacancies. 13.3% of staff came from outside of Malaysia.
The SUTS campus is comprised of new office and academic blocks (including an extensive range of teaching, laboratory and IT facilities), hostels, a 7-storey car park, a multi-purpose hall, and a separate lecture theatre with seating for.
