Biography

Raymond is a tenured academic at the School of Computing & Design, Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak Campus), Malaysia, and a sessional academic at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies, Swinburne University of Technology (Hawthorn Campus), Australia. He has been lecturing in Computer Science/Information Systems for many years. His teaching has focused on programming (Introduction to Programming in C, Object-oriented Programming using C++, etc) and database (Database Analysis & Design, Database Management Systems). Besides teaching, he has been actively pursuing research in computational and artificial intelligence, with a particular interest in the applications of nature-inspired computational methodologies to various optimisation, scheduling and planning problems.

Research Interests

1.     Complexity Theory

• analysis of the self-organising behaviour and emergent properties of complex adaptive systems using agent-based modelling, artificial life and cellular automata
• study of the interactions of competitive/cooperative agents that lead to desirable and predictable system-wide properties
• simulations and development of informatics to understand and control complex adaptive systems

2.     Evolutionary Computation

• investigation on the learning paradigms – adaptive learning vs. evolutionary learning through iterated prisoner’s dilemma
• application of evolutionary techniques to complex system optimisation and modelling
• development of evolutionary/metaheuristic techniques for quantised optimisation problems such as cutting/packing problems, scheduling/timetabling problems, routing/planning problems, etc

3.     Others

• application of machine learning and data mining techniques to named entity recognition and text classification
• design and development of artificial intelligence techniques for games
• security and usability issues on distributed systems
• educational studies on e-learning technologies, implementations and effects
