What services are available under Live@Edu?
Live@Edu is a program run by Microsoft that offer a wide range of online collaboration services for education sector. The services are divided into “Core Services” and “Optional Tools”.
Live@Edu Core Services:
The core services of Live@Edu consist of Outlook Live email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes functions. Outlook Live is hosted by Microsoft; administered and supported by Swinburne as the official email services for Swinburne’s students. Come 11 November 2010, Outlook Live mail will replace the existing Student Webmail.
Optional Tools:
Apart from e-mail and calendar, a wide range of other tools are made available for students under Live@Edu. You can use the Windows Live ID provided by Swinburne to access and use these tools. Please note that these tools will not be supported by Swinburne, however comprehensive help and support resources is available at http://windowslivehelp.com/.
The optional tools are:
- Windows Live Photos
- Skydrive
- Messenger
- Office Web Apps
- Personal blog site
When will Live@edu be available for use?
As of November 11, 2010, all new student email will be delivered to your new Outlook Live mailbox.
Will my email address change?
No, your official Swinburne email address will continue to be studentid@ students.swinburne.edu.my, however your email address will also be your new Windows LiveID.
What is my Windows LiveID?
Essentially your Windows LiveID is the username you use to access all the services offered by Live@edu. Your Windows LiveID and student email address are one and the same.
How do I access my new Outlook Live mail account?
From a web browser, navigate to http://outlook.com and login with your Windows LiveID (your student email address), the initial password will be your 6-digits date of birth (YYMMDD). You will be required to change your password at first logon.
What will happen to my mail in the old webmail?
After 11 November 2010, no new email will be delivered to your old webmail account. However, you can still login to your old webmail to read old mail or send email. You will need to arrange to manually save your old mail or move them to your Outlook Live mailbox prior to the old system being decommissioned. It is expected that all mail should be migrated by the end of January 2011. If your old mail has not been migrated by this time please contact the ITS Service Desk on ext 5000 or via email at servicedesk@swinburne.edu.my.

I had my old webmail account configured to forward mail to an external account, will this be the case with my Outlook Live account?
Unfortunately no. It is understandable why some chose to forward their mail with the old webmail interface, however with Outlook Live and it's feature rich functionality plus the ability to use Outlook Live to read and send mail from your other accounts, you may decide there is no need to forward your mail anymore. Should you wish to continue forwarding your mail, you can still do this by setting up a forwarding rule as described at http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/ms.exch.ecp.learnredirectto.aspx.
What happens if I change my password?
If you change your password from within Windows Live, only your Windows Live password will change, your Novell/Blackboard password will not change.
What happens if I forget the password for my Windows LiveID?
Before you forget your passwords, it is recommended that you setup your challenge response questions. You can do this from within the account area of your Live account at https://account.live.com/ChangeSQSA.aspx.
- If you have set your challenge response questions in Windows Live, your can reset your password at https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx. This will only change your Windows LiveID password.
- If you haven't set any challenge response questions it will be necessary for you to contact the ITS Service Desk on ext 5000 who can reset your password for you after verifying your identity.
Can I keep my email and other Live services when I graduate?
Yes. The services provided by Live@edu including your email and SkyDrive are yours to keep for life.
Is my mail backed up?
Traditional backups are not performed on Outlook Live mailboxes. Instead, Outlook Live uses highly available mailboxes and servers to ensure your mail is not lost as a result of hardware failure or other disaster.
What if I accidentally delete an email, can I get it back?
Items that you delete go into the Deleted Items folder where they can be recovered if necessary. Items will stay in the Deleted Items folder until you manually clean them out. Once emptied from the Deleted Items folder you can recover them for a further 14 days, after which the item is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. What policies or terms and conditions apply to the use of Live@edu
Students using the Live@edu Core Service, i.e. Outlook Live email and calendar function are subject to Swinburne’s policy and procedures, terms and conditions, privacy policies and acceptable use policies.
Swinburne’s Information Technology Services is no longer responsible for backing up student e-mail or files and other content stored in the Live@edu services. Information Technology Services will protect passwords in accordance with the IT Security Policy.
While Microsoft retains all rights to its services and deployment tools, the University retains all rights to all content, technology, materials and services delivered or forwarded to Microsoft under the Live@edu agreement.

As a side note, students will be required to accept Microsoft’s terms and conditions and privacy policy before they can use other Windows Live tools such as Skydrive, Windows Live Photos, Messenger, etc.
