  • Read, Write and Win Competition 2010 Launch

The Read, Write and Win Competition 2010 was officially launched at the Swinburne Sarawak Library on 23 September 2010. A collaborative effort between the Library and the School of Language and Foundation, the aim of this endeavour is to inculcate a healthy reading culture among Swinburne Sarawak students. The launch drew a sizeable crowd and included a first-time-ever Read Aloud session where two students read excerpts from their favourite books.

Ms Dayang Zarina, the Manager of Information Resources, and Associate Professor Wang Su Chen, Head of the School of Language and Foundation, were both present at the launch. In their speeches, both speakers highlighted the importance of reading broadly across disciplines. Both Ms Zarina and Dr Wang expressed their hope in seeing more students develop a love for reading.

The highlight of the event was the Read Aloud session. Two students – Jerome Chan (Malaysia) and Joan Akatukunda (Uganda), read excerpts from their favourite books. Jerome read excerpts from Rick Riordan’s The Last Olympian, while Joan read the first chapter of A Tale of Two Cities, one of her first reads.

The Read, Write and Win Competition 2010 will run through 27 October 2010. To enter this competition, all a student needs to do is to submit a 500-word summary of his or her favourite book, and explain why the Swinburne Library should have this book on its shelves. Winners of this competition will be acknowledged at a ceremony on 10 November 2010, where they will read their winning write-ups.

Throughout the entire period of the competition, a Read Aloud session will be held every Wednesday at 4:30pm in the Library. Each week, two students will read excerpts from their favourite books. Ms Dayang Zarina of Information Resources has promised that the Library would make available on its shelves titles that are read during each of the read aloud sessions. Students who are interested in participating in the Read, Write and Win Competition 2010 or the weekly read aloud sessions are invited to speak to any one of the library staff members for more information or email to iresource@swinburne.edu.my.

    Student Rover Service

Do you need help with installing Swin Wifi or OPAC searching or any other IT related issues in the library? Our Student Rovers are here to help you. This program started in April 2010 and designed to provide roving on-the-spot assistance to students.

The student rovers provided students with assistance both using the library such as locating library materials, searching OPAC, printing and photocopying and using the computer i.e installing of Swin Wifi and other IT and library related issues.

They can be easily spotted by a black vest with the wording Student Rover- Here to help' on the back of the vest. They will be in the library between 10.30am to 4.30pm. Currently, Swinburne Library recruited 4 student rovers and we are looking forward for a positive response from our students. Swinburne Library is creating an environment where not only staff can assist the students but students can also help to manage and assist the students within library.
