- Cards are not transferable, i.e. they cannot be used by another person.
- Lost cards must be reported and replaced immediately
- By borrowing from the library all borrowers automatically accept responsibility as defined in the Library Use Policy and Code of Conduct
- Material borrowed must be returned or renewed on or before the due date and time as indicated on the loan receipt slip.
- Borrowers must accept personal responsibility for the care of all items borrowed with their library card, and for their return in good condition to Swinburne Library
- All items must be borrowed at the appropriate service desk before borrowers leave the Library.
- Most items from Reserve Collections are available for use in the library only and should not be taken out of the Library.
- Items borrowed should normally be returned through the appropriate return book drop.
- Overdue items should be returned to the Lending Desk inside the Library so that borrowers may pay any fine that is owed.
- If an item is lost or damaged borrowers must report this to the Lending Desk immediately.
- Any item that is not returned within six weeks of the due date, or by the end of the academic year in which it was borrowed, whichever occurs sooner, will be considered as lost. - There could be additional charges imposed if the lost items charges are not paid within the specified period from the date an invoice has been issued.

- Swinburne employees must obtain a library clearance before leaving employment with Swinburne to show that all outstanding material has been returned and all penalties resolved.
