Swinburne Sarawak Library Book Donation
Since the promotion of this campaign in April 2011, library has received a very positive response from Swinburne staff and students. Swinburne Library managed to collect quite a number of good books that will later go to charity. Book Donation activity is supporting the Going Green Campaign which was launched early April 2011 and the message we wish to convey to the University community is to let them know the importance of preserving our rainforest. Throwing old books and magazines is not contributing to a green activity but donating them will be a smart choice. All books, mainly fiction were donated to the Salvation Army together with the Going Green@ Swinburne eco bag on the 28th December 2011. Our hope is that these children will develop the reading culture and the spirit of the big 3R (Recycle, Reuse and Reduce ) will live on. We are looking forward to organise the similar activity in 2012 and we hope more people will be involved. We would like to thank all staff and students who had supported this activity and making it a success.
All books are kept in the Going Green@ Swinburne eco bag.

Read, Write and Win Competition 2011 Prize Giving Ceremony
The Read, Write and Win Competition 2011 has finally had it winners. Winners were announced during the Prize Giving Ceremony on 23 November 2011. Leong Zhen Yu bagged the first prize with a compelling review of John Grisham’s The Confession. He wins himself a 500GB external hard disk. The second place went to Joan Akatukunda who wrote a review of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success while Yu Yin Kii was placed third. Yu Yin Kii also participated in a Read Aloud session during the launch of the Read, Write and Win Competition in September where he gave a dramatic rendition of Spooky Tales by Kenny Fong.
Also invited that day was the Associate Professor Wang Su Chen, Head of School of Language and Foundation, who had earlier given a motivational short speech during the opening of the ceremony.
The Read, Write and Win competition is jointly organised by Information Resources and the School of Language and Foundation. The collaboration started last year when 4 Language lecturers were involved as judges. This year’s judges are Christina Yin, Annie Neoh Su Yen, Wong Yao Hing, Khin Khin Aye and Kyi Kyi Thatun. Throughout the period of the competition, Read Aloud sessions were conducted every Wednesday where students would read and share their favourite books with one other in the library. During the last Read Aloud session, Christina Yin, Annie Neoh Sue Yen and Wong Yao Hing had their turns to read their favourite books.
With 10 submissions this year, we hope to receive more entries next year when the competition is organised during the Reading Month. This competition will encourage students to read more and at the same time it will enhance their writing skills. All books of which reviews were written for the competition and all titles that were read during the Read Aloud sessions will be added to the library’s collection

Going green @ Swinburne Library

Going Green @ Swinburne Library, that is the message that we would like to pass on to everyone. It is time for us to take part in helping our dying planet and even though doing these small things won’t save the Earth, or from killing ourselves with polluted air, dirty water and the sun’s ultraviolet rays, but if enough people around the world join these efforts, we can have a positive impact on our environment and give future generation a more stable greener Earth. Going Green is all about attitude and together we can recycle, reuse and reduce (the big 3R).
Keep yourself updated on the activities of the campaign through out this year that includes book donation, selling of our campaign eco-bag and etc. We have collaborated with Swinburne Green Club on collecting the recycle papers from all over the University and we really hope to get a positive feedback from everyone. In order to show our support, all library staff are wearing the campaign badge and also had shown their creativity and effort on making interesting things out of recycled material. All of them are on display in the library for everyone to see. We have done our part so when is your turn? Join us, start living green and if you are lucky enough you might win yourself a very nice Going Green @ Swinburne eco bag!
