The Impact of Employee Competencies (Functional and Managerial) on Employees Performance in Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC Sarawak)

The main intention of this research is to examine the impact of employee competencies, namely, functional competencies and managerial competencies on employees’ performance among executives in Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC Sarawak). Hence, to achieve this objective, a quantitative survey method is applied through structured self-completion questionnaire which adopted from previous literatures.   

The research sample and population consisted of 104 employees among managers and assistant managers of SEDC Sarawak, a state – owned statutory body that established under the laws of the State of Sarawak with the general aim of promoting the commercial, industrial and socio-economic development of the Sarawak State.

A total of 104 questionnaires were distributed, and 99 statically viable questionnaires were analysed by using different statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regressions through the latest version of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). A pilot test was carried out prior actual data collection and a Cronbach Alpha test was used to evaluate the instruments reliability for three variables in this research study. Based on the analysis, all instruments scored more than 0.7 and acceptable for this study.

The results indicated positive relationships between functional and managerial competencies on employees’ performance at SEDC Sarawak. In other word, there are positive impact of functional and managerial competencies on enhancement of employees’ performance. From the respondents’ point of view, the managerial competencies are the most importance compared to functional competencies on employees’ performance. Generally, the results indicated that the respondents believed that there is a strong association between the two independent variables (functional and managerial competencies) on the employees’ performance in organisation.

Finally, the study discussed the implications of this research from both managerial and theoretical perspective that could contribute in improving the employees’ performance as well as few recommendations for future research.
