At Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, we realize that Information Technology and online learning now forms an integral role in the learning experience. This guide serves as information about any computer related questions that you may have, as well as resources.

Acceptable Use Policy (Code of Practice)
Students should familiarize themselves with the University’s Acceptable Use Policy to ensure they do not breach any conditions. A failure to comply with the Policy by a student will be dealt with accordingly.
In brief, the following definitions of breaches include, but are not limited to:
- Unauthorized access to system accounts or accounts of other members of the Swinburne community;
- Willful damage to or deletions of data from any Swinburne account, system or website;
- Unauthorized access to any Swinburne electronic account, system or website;
- Malicious, culpable, offensive, reckless or negligent acts committed using Swinburne computer services;
- Misrepresentation of Swinburne University to external network users;
- Any attempts to break password files;
- Use of electronic mail, IRC, MUD or other forms of electronic communication that violates the Information Technology Services Access and Use Policy;
- Disruptive actions, via electronic access, to any part of the Swinburne computer network or systems;
- Unauthorized electronic access to student records, human resources, payroll, financial records, library systems or any other access to University electronic systems;
- Use of University Information Technology resources to illegally access external computers, databases or networks facilities;
- Any other misconduct relating to information technology resources which distracts from or interferes with the business of the University;
- Any use of the network which violates state, federal and/or international law;
Any other violation of the Swinburne Information Technology (IT) Systems Acceptable Use Policy and Procedures.

Network Accounts and Passwords
Novell Network
Students who have enrolled in their courses and paid their fees ), an account will be allocated automatically. The account provides access to Swinburne Novell network and allows storage space of up to 20 megabytes. Access to the network requires the student’s ID number and his/her date of birth in the format of yymmdd (y=year, mm=month, d=day). Students are advised to change their password as soon as possible.
- Login in to the Novell Network and Lab Pcs
- Enter ID number and password in the Novell Login window.
- Use the correct context (Click on the Advanced button). Example: The Foundation context is Foundation.Student.Kuching.Sarawak
- Leave the Servers blank.
- Press enter.
- Once the window login is displayed, press Enter again.
- For PC access without Novell, just check on the Workstation Only checkbox and press enter (no password required).
- Student Email Accounts
Current students are automatically allocated an email account with an email address in the form of
StudentID@students.swinburne.edu.my
Example: 4163535@students.swinburne.edu.my
Students can also access their email from home or outside of Swinburne.
- Go to or type http://studentmail.swinburne.edu.my in the IE address bar.
- The username is your student ID and the password used is the same as your Novell password.
- Please allow a maximum of 2 weeks for your account to be created. Students who do not have a Novell login 2 weeks after the student registration should approach ITS for assistance.
Blackboard Login
Students can use Blackboard to access lecture materials and announcements. This login is the seven digits of the student’s ID number, and the password is his/her date of birth in the format of ddmmyy (y-year, m=month, d=day).

- Once you are logged into the Blackboard you can change your password. This is done in Personal Information/Change Password.
- Wireless Technology
ITS has put into service a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Swinwifi and SwinGuest, covering parts of Swinburne buildings. This allows access to the following:
- Email
- Internet and Intranet services
- Novell services
- Library resources
Wireless access units will provide connectivity between mobile computers fitted with wireless network interface cards and the university’s network. This means that when the wireless user requires access to the network he/she simply turns on the computer anytime, anywhere on campus within the wireless coverage area.
- To connect, students can get the VPN software CD from the library. A guide on how to install and connect is also included. A copy of the guide and software is also available in Blackboard.

Students can access the computers in these labs to assist them with their studies. For door access PIN codes please observe the welcome message whenever you turn on the Lab PCs.

Open Access Rules and Regulations
- Electronic workstations (except for library catalogue workstations) may only be used by current Swinburne students and staff.
- Swinburne identity card must be presented on request.
- Swinburne computing facilities may only be used for the legitimate educational, research and administrative purposes of Swinburne.
- All other use is forbidden.
Rules that apply to all Swinburne Computer Labs
- Students must abide by licence requirements of any software or resources they use on the workstations.
- Unless otherwise permitted by the Copyright Act, unauthorized copying or public performance of works or audiovisual material is prohibited. The university does not authorize students to make copies or deal with copyright material without permission of the copyright owner. This includes MP3 files.
- Damaging equipment, altering software settings or installing software on the workstations is forbidden.
- No tampering/form feeding of the printers in the library.
- No eating or drinking (food and drinks are to be kept in the bag).
- No offensive pictures.
- No games (computer games, including IRC, playing with sporting goods, etc.).
- No unlicensed or illicit software.
- Students must also abide by the laboratory rules shown on booking sheets, computer screens or notices near the workstations.
- Video surveillance operates in all open access computer laboratories.
Anyone found in breach of these rules will be removed from the lab.
Any acts of vandalism and/or theft will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
WARNING: It is a criminal offence to:
- Obtain access to data without having obtained authorization.
- Delete, alter or insert data without having obtained authorization.
- Damage databases and software programs.

Printing Services
Black and white printing is available. Payment for printing is by Library copy card.
