Aims and learning outcomes

The aim of this unit is to provide students with the basics of thermodynamics involved in chemical engineering. The unit will emphasise on the first principles of thermodynamics, thermophysics, and thermodynamics of chemical processes.

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

  1. appreciate and explain the significance of the principles and concepts of thermodynamics and to perform a thermodynamic analysis of any process. (K1,K2,K3,K4,K5,S2,A2,A4) (EAC PO1)
  2. analyze and appreciate thermodynamic cycles and their applications.(K4,K5,K6,A2,A3) (EAC PO2)
  3. estimate the inter-conversion of energy, the efficiency of heat and work extraction from thermodynamic systems. (K4,K5,K6,A2,A3,A7) (EAC PO1)
  4. use thermodynamic property tables to obtain the relevant thermodynamic state properties. (K4,K5,K6,A2) (EAC PO1)
  5. conduct thermodynamic analysis of vapour-liquid equilibria. (K1,K2,K3,K4,K5,K6) (EAC PO2)
  6. conduct thermodynamic analysis of chemical reactions in assessing their feasibilities and their equilibrium conditions. (K1,K2,K3,K4,K5,K6,A2,A3) (EAC PO2)

Unit information

Unit Learning Outcomes

3 hours lectures per week, and 2 hours tutorial per week with 3 laboratory sessions of 3 hours each per semester.

Content

  • Introduction to thermodynamics and definitions;
  • Ideal and real gases;
  • First law of thermodynamics; volumetric properties of pure fluids and mixtures;
  • Second law of thermodynamics;
  • Thermodynamic properties of pure fluids and mixtures;
  • Phase equilibrium; free energy and chemical potential;
  • Production of power and power cycles;
  • Solution thermodynamics and their applications;
  • Chemical reaction equilibria.
