Aims and learning outcomes

This unit introduces students to the practice of visualization for various design briefs. It explores drawing and illustration techniques to produce suitable creative outcomes.

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

  1. Describe and evaluate compositions that explore a range of spatial organizations in general drawings
  2. Visually communicate mass, weight and form using gesture, simplification, facets, planes, colour and tone
  3. Use various compositional methods and drawing skills to enhance the communication of an idea
  4. Identify and develop an illustrative response to subject matter through drawing/image making

  1. Line – Using line as a tool to measure proportion and create volume
  2. Drawing Ellipses – Using ellipses to create form in the visual plane
  3. Tone – Using variation of lines to create tone and definition
  4. Overlapping- Overlapping objects in the visual plane to create unit and spatial relationship
  5. Figure Drawing – Basic measurements and proportions of the human body
  6. Microscopic Illustration – Finding and illustrating texture
  7. Applying Color – Applying and utilizing various color schemes to achieve harmony and contrast
  8. Color Studies – Exploring and utilizing various color schemes
  9. Perspective Drawing – Utilizing perspective to create depth and space
  10. Visual Structure in Illustration – Using various composition methods to enhance visual plane to tell a story
