Aims and learning outcomes

The aim of this unit is for students to develop an appreciation of the design aspects associated with chemical engineering processes, and introduces strategies for chemical engineering design problem solving including computer aided chemical engineering designs.

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

  1. define a problem and identify design requirements. (K5,K6,S2,S3,S4) (EAC PO1)
  2. identify the design process stages used in a design cycle in developing solutions to problems. (K5,K6,S3,S4,A5,A6) (EAC PO2)
  3. use published works to research aspects of design problems. (K5,K6,A1,A5) (EAC PO11)
  4. demonstrate oral and written communication skills when working in a group and preparing a group report. (A2,A3,A7) (EAC PO9)

Unit information

Learning and teaching structures

Lectures (3 hours), Tutorials (2 hours), Labs (2 hours), and 7.5 hours of self-study per week.

Content

Introduction to design as an applied subject, the role of analytical techniques in design

Introduction to process flow sheeting

  • Material balance on equipment and process with and without chemical reaction
  • Energy balance on equipment and process with and without chemical reaction

Introduction to process design using ASPEN-HYSYS Software
