Research data are a valuable resource and in many cases have significant value beyond their original use. There are many benefits to sharing research data:

  • promotes the research and researchers that created the data
  • can lead to re-use, discovery, and increased citation
  • provides important resources for education and training
  • reduces the cost of duplicating or collecting similar data
  • maximises transparency and accountability
  • enables scrutiny of research findings
  • can lead to new collaboration between creator and user
  • encourages the improvement and validation of research methods
  • as a research output in can provide direct credit to the researcher

The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research advises that researchers should share data wherever possible. While there is no mandate for Open Access Data, the ARC considers data management planning an important part of the responsible conduct of research and strongly encourages the depositing of data arising from a project in an appropriate publicly accessible repository. This attitude is shared by the international community. In 2012 The Royal Society (UK) also published a report on Science as an Open Enterprise.

File sharing

Cloudstor

Cloudstor is a large file transfer service available to all research staff and students. The service is available through Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet).

  • For more information go to Swinburne ITS CloudStor service
  • Cloudstor is a FREE service available to all current Swinburne staff and students.
  • You can share any file with a maximum of 100 people.
  • You can upload files up to 100GB in size.
  • Your SIMS username and password are used to access the Cloudstor service.
  • If your colleagues are external to Swinburne and do not have access to Cloudstor, you can send them a guest voucher to allow them to upload files to share.
  • Files are automatically deleted from Cloudstor after a maximum of 20 days.
  • People who you share files with are able to forward those files on to anyone else to download without consent, so in this respect, it is not a “secure” service.
  • When a shared Cloudstor file is downloaded, all parties will automatically receive an email.
  • Cloudstor uses HTML5, which is known to work well with up-to-date versions of Firefox and Google Chrome on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The upload limit in Internet Explorer is currently 1.95GB per file as Internet Explorer does not yet support HTML5.
  • Use of this service is subject to the Swinburne’s IT Systems Acceptable Use Policy and Copyright policies.

Scientific Data

Scientific Data‌Launching in May 2014 and open now for submissions, Scientific Data is a new open-access publication of Data Descriptors: peer-reviewed, scientific publications that provide detailed descriptions of experimental and observational datasets. Scientific Data exists to help you publish, discover and reuse research data. Hosted on nature.com and the destination for millions of scientists globally every month — Data Descriptors will be disseminated to the widest possible audience through a programme of continuous online publication.

Authors will be expected to deposit their datasets in an appropriate repository prior to peer-review. If an appropriate repository does not exist or if the available repositories do not support a confidential peer-review process, authors are advised to to submit their data to a generalist scientific repository such as figshare or Data Dryad.

Research Data Australia

Research Data AustraliaResearch Data Australia is a free data discovery service designed to promote visibility of Australian research data collections. The repository contains data descriptions only and facilitates links to data archives. This is the flagship service of the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) an organisation working with research institutions and data producing agencies to bring about four transformations to data – unmanaged to managed, disconnected to connected, invisible to findable and single use to reusable – that will enable Australia’s research data to become a national strategic resource to support better, more efficient and defensible research, and improved policy input.

To date Swinburne has contributed public datasets, researcher developed software analysis tools, and profiles for researchers throughout the university, and from research groups such as CASBPsyC and CAOUS.

If you would like to create a profile and submit datasets, collections or software to RDA please contact the Research Information Services team at RIS@swin.edu.au.

figshare

figsharefigshare is a repository where users can make all of their research outputs available in a citable, shareable and discoverable manner. figshare allows users to upload any file format to be made visualisable in the browser so that figures, datasets, media, papers, posters, presentations and filesets can be disseminated in a way that the current scholarly publishing model does not allow.
