Swinburne Digital Health extends its footprint to support healthcare

KUCHING  Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) has received much-needed donations in the form of 60 personal computers from Swinburne Sarawak as part of the university’s corporate social responsibility.

The donated computers which will be used in hospital daily operations to support clinicians in streamlining operations will benefit patients and stakeholders especially in improving the quality of healthcare management. The computers will be placed in the SGH Radiology Department, Medan Hospital, Covid-19 Low-Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centres (PKRC), as well as in various wards.

At the recent handover ceremony, the event was represented by Director of SGH Dr Ngian Hie Ung and Swinburne’s Director of Swinburne Sarawak’s Digital Innovation Precinct and Centre for Digital Futures Professor Patrick Then. Also present to witness the ceremony was Minister of Local Government and Housing Sarawak Dato Sri Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian.

During the event, Dr Ngian thanked Swinburne for their contribution as the donated computers support and accelerate SGH’s move forward in digitalising its operations and business processes.

“The donations are timely for us in view of the increased activities of temporary Covid-19 Assessment Centres (CAC), PKRCs, as well as recent vaccination programmes for medical frontliners’ booster shots and recipients under vulnerable high-risk categories,” said Dr Ngian.

“SGH has been working with Swinburne in various research projects which aims to digitally transform healthcare services during the Covid-19 period, including Stay-Home-Notice surveillance systems and remote patient body temperature monitoring,” she added.

Meanwhile, Professor Then commented that engaging with local partners such as SGH signifies Swinburne’s commitment to become the new prototype of a new and different university for the 21st century.

In line with Swinburne’s Horizon 2025 strategic plan of bringing people and technology together, the initiative supports the university’s ‘moon shot’ commitment towards providing every Swinburne partner with a tech solution to contribute to society’s increasing need for transformative technology and innovative ideas.

Under Swinburne’s Digital Health research and development team led by Professor Then, the university has been collaborating with SGH in curbing Covid-19 since March 2020. The research draws upon human-centred health initiatives which aims to deliver a comprehensive continuum of care to patients through digital transformation.
