Swinburne hosts courtesy visit by UNIMAS

KUCHING – A delegation of 11 from UNIMAS led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi recently paid a courtesy visit to Swinburne’s Sarawak campus.

On hand to welcome the delegation were Swinburne Sarawak’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Professor John Wilson, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Ir. Professor Lau Hieng Ho and other Executive Group members of Swinburne. They held a dialogue session and toured the campus including laboratories and Centre for Digital Futures.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the background of the university by Professor Wilson where he explained that the Kuching campus is a partnership between Swinburne Australia and the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak. It offers identical courses as its main campus in Melbourne but with 1/3 the fees of studying abroad.

Professor Wilson also elaborated on the advantages for students studying at the Kuching campus to transfer or go on an exchange programme to the Melbourne campus, Swinburne’s research focus in data science, health innovation, smart cities, social innovation and manufacturing futures, recognition as the first private university in East Malaysia to be awarded three-star rating by MyRA, as well as graduate employability where most Swinburne’s graduates are hired by the Top 100 global brands in the world.

Meanwhile, Swinburne’s Dean of Faculty of Business, Design and Arts Professor Lee Miin Huui touched on Swinburne’s ongoing progress in obtaining the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation and spoke on possible collaboration through shared resources with UNIMAS on the ACCA Accelerate programme.

On the other hand, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science Professor Su Hieng Tiong shared with the guests about Swinburne’s industry engagement and compulsory internship requirements, as well as the Staff Attachment Scheme where the engineering academics are required to go on a one-year industrial attachment to upgrade their knowledge and skills, and to be up-to-date with current issues, trends and future directions of industries.

Swinburne’s 2019 intakes are now open for enrolment for engineering, computing, design, business and science courses. Classes will commence on 4 March for degree and postgraduate programmes, and 8 April for foundation and diploma programmes. The university offers competitive internal scholarships and bursaries for all level of studies.
