KUCHING – A team from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus made the university proud when they emerged among the top twenty in the Semi Final Round and top five in the Final Round of the recent PNB 1 Malaysia Investment Quiz-University Category held at Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Putrajaya.

The Swinburne team comprising Sow Kai Hsian, Wong Siew Moi and Lyphia Lau Yoke Tay from the Faculty of Business and Design, was among the 1,355 students from 23 universities participating. The students qualified for the Top 5 Teams at the Final Round which includes Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia and Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman.

For their efforts, the trio won a cash prize worth RM3,000 and plaques. In addition, the top 10 students from participating universities also received a consolation prize of RM150 worth of Amanah Saham Gemilang (ASG) Pendidikan.

The national level quiz was organised by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) via its subsidiary Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB) with the objective to educate university students on investment management. The three-part competition consisted of a preliminary round of online test on Security and Financial Analysis, PNB, ASNB, Unit Trust Industry and Financial Planning, Portfolio Theory as well as Fundamental of Finance and Economics, while the semi-final round covered investment quiz, crossword puzzle and anagram related to accounting, investment, finance and economic.

The final round saw the Top 5 teams involved in game shows, selecting low risk up to high risk questions held in front of audiences.

According to Sow, team work plays an important role in the team success while Wong opined that her team’s diverse background in accounting, investment, finance and economic led them to win the competition.

Accompanying lecturer Shella Georgina Beatrice praised the trio for their determination and efforts.

“It is certainly a proud moment for me to witness our students achieving their best in competitions that they take part in. They truly have demonstrated the aspects of education that we offer at Swinburne Sarawak, namely professional-driven, entrepreneurship-focused and industry-relevant,” said Shella, adding that the Faculty Dean Associate Professor Dr Lee Miin Huui was supportive of their participation in the event.
