Online Learning Etiquette

What is netiquette?

Netiquette is shorthand for “Internet etiquette”. Netiquette is combination of two words i.e. network (or netizen) and etiquette and is defined as a set of rules for acceptable online behavior.

What are the netiquette for online learning and teaching?

  • Mute your mic/Turn off your webcam during online classes
    Keep your microphone muted and webcam off whenever you’re not talking so as not to add background noise.

  • Be respectful
    If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, don’t say it online either.

  • Grammar and spelling matter
    In an educational setting (even online), keep it formal. Follow grammar rules for online learning too.

  • Cite your sources
    Nothing is truly private online.

  • Be aware of strong language, all caps, and exclamation points
    It is easy for written text to be misread and misunderstood. Give and expect respect.

  • Be forgiving
    Remember that not everyone will know these netiquette. It is very different than simply talking to a person face-to-face.

  • Keep your Lecturer/instructor informed
    Ask your Lecturer/instructor for help when you need it—let them know if you are ill, unable to log on, etc.

  • Always save your work
    Save your work locally on your computer and/or in the cloud where you can easily access it.

What is the typical workload for online learning?

For each hour spent in your online classroom, you should plan another two to three hours on course work. Just like in traditional classes, you are expected to spend 40 hours per week for your course.

What should I do before the start of the online class?

It is possible to begin readings and preparation prior to your online class. Class and reading materials are available on your unit CANVAS.

Can I contact the lecturer or tutor after the online class?

Yes, this can be achieved via synchronous drop-in discussion sessions (like consultation during normal time). You can make an appointment with your lecturer or tutor for a drop-in discussion session.

Are there online group projects?

Yes, group projects are part of the online learning. The objective of a group project is for the students to work together online and achieve the learning outcomes of a unit.

What happens if I missed assignment deadlines?

As per the normal process, the extension procedure is here: https://www.swinburne.edu.my/current-students/manage-course/special-consideration-adjustments-extensions/extensions.php. Applications for extension must be made to the unit convenor by email before the assessment is due.

When will my lecturer or tutor respond to my written queries?

Your lecturer or tutor will set clear expectations on how he/she will respond to your queries either written or verbal; either during online class or online tutorial etc . You can also make an appointment for a synchronous drop-in discussion session too with your queries.

How do I know which tutorial group /section I am in?

You may refer to your allocated timetable, locate the unit code, the number followed by the unit code is your group number. eg: FST10014-01 is group 1, FST10014-02 is group 2.

I am a new student who had missed out on Virtual Orientation especially on Canvas Learning Management System student overview. Is there any video or information that I may refer to?
