This programme introduces the managerial process for the attainment of project’s goals based on the three criteria of time, budget and scope.

You will go through the fundamentals of project management; administration, monitoring, conducting and appraisal of a project. This course is suitable for people just starting off in their executive careers, and covers the concept and skills required for project administration and management.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a “Project Management” Certificate from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.

Course objectives

This course will help you in the application of basic project management skills in a competitive workplace. Through this course, you will be able to improve your project management by:

  • Understanding the essence of project management in practice.
  • Improving managerial skills in project management.
  • Applying the right techniques in project management.
  • Improving competency in project management.

Course content

You will be required to attend all 3 days of the programme, which focus on fundamentals in management. The topics covered during the programme include:

  • Concept of Projects
  • Needs Identification and Proposed Solution
  • Project planning
  • Project implementation
  • Project Team
  • Summary of course content and presentation of project proposal by participants in teams.

Day 1

Module 1

Concept of Project

  • Definition of a project and its attributes
  • Key constraints within which a project must be managed
  • How a project is “born”
  • Life of a project
  • Steps involved in the project management process
  • Benefits of project management

Module 2

Needs Identification and Proposed Solution

  • Review the project life cycle:
    • identifying needs
    • proposing a solution
    • performing the project
    • terminating the project
  • Focus on needs identification.
  • Identify needs and select projects.
  • Develop Request For Proposals (RFP).
  • The proposal solicitation process.

Day 2

Module 3

Project planning

  • Estimate the duration for each activity.
  • Establish the estimated start time and required completion time for the overall project.
  • Calculate the earliest times at which each activity can start and finish, based on the project’s estimated start time.
  • Calculate the latest times by which each activity must start and finish in order to complete the project by its required completion time.
  • Determine the amount of positive or negative slack.
  • Identify the critical (longest) path of activities.

Project implementation

  • Understand that people are the key to project success
  • Responsibilities of the project manager
  • Skills needed to successfully manage projects
  • Techniques for developing those skills
  • Approaches to effective delegation
  • Ways the project manager can manage and control changes

Module 6

Summary of course content and review of progress of participants.

Each team will present a project proposal incorporating the need analysis, schedule of implementation, resources required, expect outcomes and benefits of the project to justify its feasibility and viability.

Dr Ong Liap Teck has held leadership positions in automobile retailing, construction, consulting, and turnkey contracting for major infrastructure works before joining Swinburne. Leveraging on his work experience, he coordinates industry consulting projects that connect undergraduate students with the business through innovative techniques and critical thinking.

Dr Ling Chui Ching is a professional member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and CPA Australia. She specializes in accounting, taxation, accounting information systems, and corporate governance.
