Prepare to study

After accepting your offer, it’s time to get ready to study. But first, you will need to enrol, attend orientation and get your student card.

Your first step will be taking part in the welcome and orientation sessions.

Don’t forget to familiarise yourself with Swinburne Sarawak’s online systems, which will be your primary platform for study, along with getting your student ID card and all study materials you may need.

Enrolment

If you have questions about enrolment, you can contact our officer at +60 82 415 353 between Monday and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.

During Orientation Week, you can speak with a Student Operation Officer.

Defer, suspend or cancel an enrolment

Grounds on which a student’s enrolment may be deferred, suspended or cancelled:

  1. Where a commencing or continuing student does not arrive in time to commence classes for the relevant study period, the university may, in its absolute discretion, not permit the student to commence studies and defer or cancel the student’s enrolment.
  2. Where a student does not complete pre-requisite units they may not be able to continue with their program until the units are completed.
  3. Where a student elects to take credit/RPL and there are no other units in which the student can enrol in the relevant study period.
  4. Where a student receives permission to change to another intake.
  5. Where a student elects to take a leave of absence within the university’s policies.Where a student elects to withdraw from their program within the university’s policies.
  6. Non-payment of any monies owing to the university.
  7. Failure to meet the university’s progression standards.
  8. Misconduct as defined in the university’s policies.
  9. Where a student is not attending classes and either cannot be contacted or their academic unit determines that they have missed too many classes to continue with their studies in the program or particular unit/s in the relevant study period.
  10. Failure to maintain a continuous valid enrolment.
  11. Failure to comply with any applicable standards of conduct, statutes, regulations, policies and procedures of the university which provide for enrolment deferral, suspension or cancellation as an outcome of such failure to comply.
  12. Where a student’s course cannot be extended due to government requirements.

Note: Deferring, suspending or cancelling an enrolment may affect a student’s visa. Students should always contact Student Operations Unit of the University for advice on how a change to their enrolment status may impact on their visa.

Orientation

The welcome session is the start of your orientation week.

These sessions work together to ensure you are introduced to the academic, social and community aspects of student life, including resources and support available during your time at Swinburne Sarawak.

Orientation lets you:

  • Get a feel for campus life in a relaxed and fun atmosphere
  • Talk to current Swinburne Sarawak students
  • Meet your future classmates and teachers
  • Get important advice about your course and studies
  • Go on a campus and library tour.
  • Join a guided Kuching city tour for a nominal fee.

Student card and online student portal

Student card

Once you have arrived in Kuching, you’ll need to get your student ID card.

Your student card will identify you as a Swinburne Sarawak student, which will allow you access to services and facilities on-campus. It is also your library card and you must bring it with you when you sit for your exams.

A student card also entitles you concession prices at some businesses such as cinemas, restaurants and eateries.

How to get your student card?

Your student ID card can be issued at Student Central.

Please bring along some photo identification and your enrolment when making your ID card.

Online student portal

Swinburne Sarawak’s online student portal is known as Canvas.

It is a central space where you’ll access online materials for your course, check your student email, view your results and more. It’s a good idea to familliarise yourself with Canvas before you start your studies.
