WILPU Placement

Placement study load

A placement is equivalent to a full-time study load. The academic units are delivered using hybrid mode (online and/or F2F) and in partnerships with your Swinburne academic advisors and industry supervisors.

As you will undertake a full-time study load while on your placement, overloading by enrolling in additional units of study is not usually permitted.

Placement insurance

If you undertake a placement, you will be classified as a full-time student completing an academic program and you will be covered by Swinburne’s student placement insurance coverage.

How to apply for a placement

  1. At the start of March/September semester, you can express your interest for WIL by emailing to [email protected]. You will be invited to attend a briefing for WIL preparation.
  2. Then, you’ll be added to Career Start, a compulsory online module designed to support students completing the WILPU, and other Work Integrated Learning (WIL) initiatives. Specifically, the next steps include:

    • Create your own career profiles
    • Submit your curriculum vitae or resume and cover letter
    • Source for WIL placement opportunities and start sending applications
  3. If you successfully secured an internship placement offer, you’ll submit the evidence in Career Start Canvas for verification. The WIL convenor will then enroll you into the relevant WIL Placement Unit for the Summer/Winter term. You’ll also be allocated Swinburne academic advisor(s) to support your learning throughout your WIL placement

Securing a placement is a competitive process and will rely on the quality of your curriculum vitae or resume, cover letter, academic transcripts, and/or interview.

Every organisation will have a slightly different interview and screening processes that may involve job interviews, group assessments and other tasks.

You may be paid as part of your placement, and your employment contract is directly between you and your host organisation or industry host.

Support network for WILPU students

While on a placement, you’re considered a full-time student of Swinburne and will still have access to all of our support services at the university.

As well as your academic and industry supervisors, you can also reach out to the WIL Convenors Team for further support:
