KUCHING – The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science (FECS), Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus celebrated innovation, collaboration, and student excellence with its Semester 1, 2025 Final Year Project (FYP) Showcase themed “People in STEM Can Work Together to Build a Better World.”
The Semester 1, 2025 showcase featured sixty-six projects by 116 final-year students. It serves not only as a culmination of academic achievements but also as a platform for industry engagement, recruitment, and research collaboration.
In his opening remarks, Ir. Professor Su Hieng Tiong, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science welcomed guests and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to industry-integrated learning and global employability. He also said, “We are committed to challenging our students beyond the classroom, encouraging them to think critically, innovate boldly, and deliver solutions that can have a tangible impact.”
Appreciation was also extended to the sponsors of the event – SOCOE Sdn. Bhd., Perbena Emas Sdn. Bhd., and The James Dyson Foundation, whose support brought added prestige to the event.
The highlight of the day was the Industry Award ceremony, in which recognition was awarded to students across all three categories for their exceptional work. It also celebrates the problem-solving capabilities and future-readiness of Swinburne Sarawak graduates. This further reinforces the university’s strategic vision under Horizon 2025 and Swinburne’s Moonshots framework.
The awards were Best Achiever and Best Group Award, sponsored by SOCOE Sdn Bhd, and the Most Innovative Project awards, sponsored by Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd.
To add to the prestige of the event, a plenary talk by Mr Abdul Najib Azhfar Aini, the Marketing & Communications Manager of SOCOE, was also held. Abdul Najib spoke on the value of giving back to society through technology-driven solutions and the importance of meaningful career pathways. His insights inspired the participants to consider their future roles not just as engineers or technologists, but also contributors to broader societal progress.
In addition to the academic spotlight, the showcase also connected students with employers through an industry career booth by SOCOE Sdn Bhd and information sessions with Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS), GIFT-Sarawak and Job Sarawak. These networking and engagement sessions gave students real-time access to internships, job prospects, and insights into local industry demands.
A poster presentation in the later part of the day further enabled one-to-one interactions between students and industry guests, creating many opportunities for enhanced learning, confidence building, and strengthening of the university’s reputation as a conduit for top STEM talent.
“Swinburne’s FYP Showcase is more than just an academic milestone – it is a launchpad,” said Ir. Chai Pui Ching the organizing chair of Semester 1, 2025 FYP Showcase. It enables students to display real-world solutions to real-world problems while also opening doors to future employment, research, and entrepreneurship, she added.
Jack Teck Wei Kiing, the recipient of the Best Achiever’s Award for electrical and electronic engineering, shared that the event gives him a platform to showcase his academic growth with lecturers, family, and friends. “Throughout the years with Swinburne, I have learned to independently understand complex ideas and to adapt quickly. This will help me when I undertake interdisciplinary work in the future,” Jack shared.
“The showcase is a valuable platform to connect with industry, present our work, and gain recognition for it,” shared Gavin Ng Qi Long. The recipient of the Best Group Award for Computer Science added that the exposure to working on real-world challenges and client-focused projects gave him the confidence to tackle any challenges in the future.
