What if we told you STEM isn’t just fun but also your superpower against climate change?
If you think STEM (that’s science, technology, engineering, and math, btw) is just about solving mathematical equations or memorising formulas, think again. At Swinburne’s Big Day Out (SBDO), STEM gets real – and it gets awesome.
What is Swinburne Big Day Out?
Swinburne’s Big Day Out is an annual STEM event hosted at Swinburne Sarawak. It is a day action-packed with experiences and activities designed for secondary school students (the 5th and 4th Formers).

The BIG DAY OUT event brought STEM learning to life, with students participating in fun, hands-on activities across science, technology, engineering, and math.
That’s right. We’re talking next-level hands-on workshops and exciting tech demos enveloped in a real Australian university vibe. You’ll have the chance to hang out with current students and lecturers who live and breathe science, tech, engineering, and maths.
Whether you’re already a STEM enthusiast (we salute you for that) or still not sure what coding even means, SBDO is designed to spark your curiosity and fan your enthusiasm. SBDO will boost your STEM-fidence (see what I did there?) and expand your minds further to the possibility of you mixing creativity with science.
From Theory to Action
Here’s the thing about SBDO: it flips the script. Totally.
It’s an event where, instead of just listening to someone talk about science, you do science. That might mean you’ll find yourself coding your very first game, running a chemistry experiment that changes colour (or even explodes a little), or even testing a VR simulation.
Every activity at SBDO is built around real-world challenges and designed to help you think critically, to work with others, and innovate like a pro. How cool is that? Plus, you won’t be doing it alone. Your seniors a.k.a current Swinburne students, researchers, and lecturers, will be right beside you, guiding you, hyping you up, and maybe even learning from you too. Because here, everyone brings something to the table.

BIG DAY OUT bring STEM learning to life, with students participating in fun, hands-on activities across science, technology, and engineering.
Exciting STEM Challenges You’ll Love
The theme for SBDO this year is Carbon Warriors: Tackling Climate Change Together, and here’s what you can expect when the event drops on 19 July:
- miniature greenhouse challenge (and yes, it’s harder than it looks)
- eco-robotic challenge
- carbon footprint calculator hackathon
- carbon capture experiment.
For each session, you can expect hands-on, interactive activities designed to let your creativity run wild. Okay, maybe not run wild but you get what I mean…
Just think of it as STEM meets hackathon meets awesome field trip, all rolled into one.
Not Just Techy Stuff (But Also the Techy Stuff)
SBDO isn’t just about gadgets and gizmos. It’s about the ideas behind them.
Why do we build robots? How can we use data to solve real-world problems? What can engineering do to help the environment? The goal of SBDO is to show you how STEM is not just something to learn in school, but is the toolkit that you, as leaders of the future, need to shape a great future for yourself.
At SBDO, you’ll get to interact with different areas of STEM, from digital media to electronics, from biotechnology to sustainable design. And along the way, you’ll start seeing how your interests (yes, even if you’re into gaming or are content-savvy) could lead to a high-impact career.
SBDO Is Where You Meet Real STEM Students Doing Real STEM Things
One of the best parts of the day? You get to meet people who were once exactly where you are now. Our students and lecturers will be there to share what it’s really like to study STEM at a globally recognised Australian university. That includes the fun stuff, the hard stuff, and how they’re using what they learned to solve real problems.
Want to know how Swinburne student innovates using open-source hardware and software to tackle real-world problems? Or how our graduates land jobs with the biggest and the best employers within six months of graduation? You’ll get the inside scoop when you participate in SBDO.
Sneak Peek: What It’s Like to Study STEM at Swinburne Sarawak
SBDO also gives you the opportunity to explore our campus, so you’ll get to feel what it’s like to study at a world-recognised Australian university right here in Sarawak.
And who knows? This might just be the day you decide what you want to do after Form 5. No pressure there… just lots of inspiration.
SBDO is Where Your STEM Story Begins

Future innovators engage with interactive STEM exhibits and projects, inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists.
SBDO is not just about giving you a day of fun (though we promise it’s that too). It’s about unlocking your potential, building your confidence, and showing you that STEM is for everyone (and not just for the Science-streamers). Whether you’re a tech geek or a total beginner, SBDO is your chance to see what you’re capable of.
We’re not just talking about your future career. We’re talking about your future impact. And how your decision to go into STEM is further strengthened by this *ahem*
So if you’re ready to turn “I don’t know if I can” into “I can’t believe I did that,” Swinburne’s Big Day Out is where it begins. Let STEM surprise you. Let SBDO change the way you see science. And most of all, let yourself be curious.
