378 Swinburne Sarawak Graduates Poised to Drive Innovation and Impact

KUCHING – A total of 378 graduates from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus were conferred their academic qualifications at the university’s graduation ceremony on 28 April 2026, marking the culmination of their studies and their transition into the professional world as future changemakers.

Held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), the ceremony saw 282 graduates receiving their undergraduate degrees across multiple disciplines: 117 in business, 80 in computing, 40 in engineering, 23 in design, 11 in science, 10 in media and communication, and a double degree in Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Robotics and Mechatronics) and Bachelor of Computer Science.

Diplomas were awarded to 64 graduates, comprising 27 in business management, 18 in digital media design, 12 in information technology, 4 in accountancy, and 3 in early childhood education. The ceremony also marked Swinburne Sarawak’s first graduating cohort for the Diploma of Digital Media Design, Diploma of Early Childhood Education, and Diploma of Information Technology.

At the postgraduate level, 18 graduates received the Master of Business Administration (International), 3 the Master of Information Technology, and 2 the Master of Engineering (Research).

The university also celebrated nine Doctor of Philosophy graduates across the fields of business, engineering, and science.

The graduation ceremony brought together graduates from across Malaysia, as well as from Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Kuwait, Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, and Sri Lanka – reflecting Swinburne’s global reach. Apart from the attending graduates, an additional 65 graduates received their awards in absentia during this graduation cycle.

In attendance at the occasion were Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investment YB Datuk Dr Malcom Mussen Lamoh and his wife, who were there to support their son, Jimson Sampar anak Usin, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical).

Speaking to the media after the ceremony, YB Datuk Dr Malcom Mussen Lamoh highlighted the importance of streamlining curricula and training to meet evolving industry needs. He also pointed to the growing demand for talent in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, remarking, “We need more technically trained people to drive innovation and creativity, so that we remain aligned with the demands of the job market.”  

He also expressed appreciation to Swinburne for fostering a strong educational environment in Sarawak.

Valedictorian Victoria Frances Teng May Wen, graduating with a Bachelor of Media and Communication, described her journey at Swinburne Sarawak as one of exploration, resilience, and personal growth.

“Throughout my time here, I was fortunate to be supported by my family, lecturers, and friends who constantly encouraged me to pursue my interests and keep refining my craft,” she said.

She added that her graduation was a moment she had been looking forward to since her foundation year, making it all the more exciting to be here. She also expressed her gratitude for being able to close this chapter surrounded by friends and loved ones who lent her strength throughout her journey.

“At the same time, graduating is the beginning of something new. I’m looking ahead to the next chapter of life with wonder, anticipating the opportunities that come with it: new experiences, continued personal growth, visiting new places, and meeting new people. Above all, I hope to continue making a positive impact and to leave my mark wherever I go,” Teng said.

Sharing words of encouragement for her fellow graduates, she remarked, “No ambition is ever too big, and it is never too late to take that first step. So, take a deep breath, and do it even while you’re trembling and scared! Surround yourself with people who genuinely applaud and care for you, and be a genuine person in return. Most importantly, get enough rest. You’ve got this!”

The ceremony was presided over by Swinburne University of Technology Chancellor Professor John Pollaers OAM. Also in attendance were Professor Simon Ridings, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Swinburne; Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Swinburne Sarawak; Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Swinburne Sarawak; and members of the Council, Board of Directors, and Executive Group of Swinburne Sarawak.

The graduation ceremony was also livestreamed on Swinburne Sarawak’s official YouTube channel, allowing families and friends to join in the celebration virtually.
