Researcher of the Month – May 2026

We are pleased to feature Ir. Professor Jaka Sunarso as our Researcher of the Month of May 2026.

Professor Jaka Sunarso is a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, and the Director of the Research Centre for Sustainable Technologies at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. A Chartered Engineer and Chartered Energy Engineer, his research focuses on advancing sustainable energy technologies, including batteries, fuel cells, membranes, biomass conversion and process modeling. Prior to his tenure at Swinburne, he held the prestigious Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Banting Fellowship. Over his career, he has amassed more than 20,000 citations and achieved an h-index of 68 (Scopus).

Beyond his personal metrics, Professor Jaka’s leadership is defined by the caliber of the researchers he trains. He has guided 3 Postdoctoral Researchers and 30 postgraduate scholars (22 Ph.D. and 8 M.Eng.), many of whom have earned premier international recognition. Among these are recipients of the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan (SCEJ) Award for Outstanding Asian Researcher and Engineer, the IChemE Global Young Researcher Award (Highly Commended) and the Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad Award for Outstanding Academic Performance. Today, his former mentees occupy pivotal positions, driving innovation across both competitive industrial sectors and academia.
