KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus and Idea Company Sdn Bhd have formalised a collaboration to strengthen entrepreneurship and capability development, focusing on controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) and agri-food innovation.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at Swinburne Sarawak by Ir. Professor Lau Hieng Ho, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of Swinburne Sarawak, and Ahmad Zachry bin Anifah Aman, Group Managing Director of Idea Company Sdn Bhd. Professor Brian Wong Kee Mun, Dean of Swinburne Sarawak’s Faculty of Business, Design and Arts, and Pang Su Yen, Director of Idea Company, witnessed the signing.
The five-year collaboration, coordinated through the Swinburne Sarawak Entrepreneurship Hub, provides a framework to explore joint programmes in agripreneurship, CEA, and agri-food innovation.
Speaking at the signing, Professor Lau said the partnership reflects Swinburne Sarawak’s commitment to extending learning beyond the classroom. “Our students need opportunities to engage with real industries, technologies, and challenges. Equally, our innovation ecosystem should be connected to organisations creating practical solutions in the economy,” he said.
Idea Company operates a 16-greenhouse facility in Bestari Jaya, Selangor. Leveraging data from over 255 crop cycles, its proprietary AgOS framework supports farm-level measurement, greenhouse productivity, traceability, and data-driven agriculture.
Under the collaboration, both parties will co-develop entrepreneurship programmes, including bootcamps, professional training, and practical industry exposure. Potential student opportunities include internships, innovation challenges, and work-integrated learning at Idea Company’s facility.
A key initiative is Swinburne Sarawak’s potential involvement in the proposed National CEA Measurement Programme, aiming to strengthen connections between Sarawak, East Malaysia, and emerging developments in data-driven food production.
The collaboration directly aligns with Swinburne’s Ad Astra 2030 strategy to co-create industries of the future and develop technology-fluent graduates. It also supports Sarawak’s development priorities in food security, modern agriculture, digital transformation, and human-capital development.
Professor Brian Wong noted the partnership deepens the connection between entrepreneurship education and applied industry opportunities, supporting the development of new capabilities relevant to Sarawak’s evolving economy.
Professor Lau emphasised that the partnership marks a beginning through which industry-engaged programmes, student opportunities, new capabilities and ideas will be translated into meaningful impact.
Beyond student engagement, the MoU sets the stage for joint innovation activities and exploratory research pathways, with specific projects to be executed under separate agreements where appropriate.
Professor Lau emphasised that the signing represents the beginning rather than the culmination of the partnership. “The real measure of success will be what we create together after today: programmes delivered, students exposed to industry, new capabilities developed and new ideas translated into meaningful impact,” he said.
