Aims and learning outcomes

The aims of this unit are to equip students with the fundamental concepts of engineering for sustainability and sustainable development, introduce students to a methodology to develop sustainable engineering solutions introduce students to the green chemistry and green design concepts and to equip students with a knowledge of concepts of hazards identification and risk analysis.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, plant safety, fire science, hazardous materials, emergency management, human factors, environmental impact assessment and sustainability. (K3,K4,K5,K6,S1,A1) (EAC PO 1)
  2. Identify and assess typical sources of risk in a process plant by hazard identification and risk assessment. (K2,K3,K5,K6,S1,A1) (EAC PO 6)
  3. Apply concepts of sustainability and use methods and tools for development of sustainable solutions. (K5,K6,S1,S2,A1) (EAC PO 7)
  4. Work individually and in a team to analyze, interpret, and address problems in safety and sustainability assessment. (A6,A7) (EAC PO 9)
