Swinburne Sarawak Unveils Groundbreaking Borneo x Australian Mural: A Dynamic Blend of Culture, Education, and a Forward Look into the AI Era

Kuching, Sarawak – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak proudly unveiled its monumental Borneo x Australian mural at the Borneo Atrium last Friday, July 25, 2025. This vibrant artwork, conceived by talented alumni Stephanie Wong, Immanuel Martin, and advised by Eunice Law, stands as a bold testament to cross-cultural connections, diverse academic pathways, and its pioneering integration of Artificial Intelligence as an intentional part of the design process, symbolizing a forward look into the AI era.

The project, initiated last year, challenged the team to explore novel creative methods, demonstrating how human creativity and AI can work in synergy, not competition, while signaling Swinburne’s embrace of future technologies.

A Visual Bridge Between Continents and Disciplines

At its heart, the Borneo x Australian mural aims to visually connect Swinburne’s Sarawak and Melbourne campuses, fostering a sense of shared identity and collaborative spirit across continents. The designers articulated this goal as “a simple goal: to connect the Sarawak and Melbourne campuses through a visual language.” This vision is brought to life through the prominent depiction of two iconic animals: the majestic Hornbill from Sarawak and the instantly recognizable Australian Kangaroo. These figures, set against subtle maps of their respective lands, signify enduring collaboration and shared growth across geographical and cultural divides, celebrating “decades of shared growth, education & innovation.”

Beyond its powerful cultural homage, the mural dynamically showcases Swinburne’s diverse academic offerings. Colourful panels represent core fields such as Design, Engineering, IT, Business, Media and Communication, Science, Biotechnology, and Education. Each section thoughtfully incorporates “tools and objects that are familiar to the students in those courses,” creating a rich visual tribute to academic life and the breadth of opportunities available.

Celebrating Swinburne’s Vibrant Spirit

The artists conceived the mural as a celebration of Swinburne’s unique essence—a blend of youthfulness, energy, vibrancy, its people, and the inherent creativity that defines the institution. “We wanted the mural to feel like a celebration of Swinburne’s spirit,” the designers conveyed, emphasizing that “no matter what course you’re in, we’re all part of the same vibrant and growing community.” It is meticulously designed to elevate the everyday student experience and leave a lasting impression, showcasing “the pulse of a community alive with amazing imagination.”

Deeply respecting Swinburne’s identity, the mural complements the campus by “adding a layer of creativity and visual vibrancy.” The team firmly believes it will “evoke a sense of joy and inspiration for everyone who passes by,” sparking creativity, uplifting moods, and reinforcing the overarching spirit of possibility that defines Swinburne as a whole.

AI: An Intentional Element Reflecting Creative Evolution, Used Responsibly

A truly pioneering aspect of this Borneo x Australian mural is its deliberate and intentional integration of a small, yet significant, fraction of AI-generated elements, such as the calculator and phone among others. This is not merely an artistic choice; it serves as a subtle yet powerful reflection of the ongoing evolution of design practices and the university’s forward momentum into the AI era.

“The world is evolving, and AI is undeniably part of that growth; it’s already a part of our daily lives,” states Eunice Law, the project’s advisor. “Many people fear AI might replace human work, but we believe otherwise. AI, when used intentionally, becomes a tool for enhancement, not replacement. The idea must always come from us. AI is there to support, lighten our workloads, produce unexpected results from our raw ideas, and elevate them.”

Law further elaborates on the mural’s significance: “While the use of AI technology is undeniable these days, it is imperative that we use it cautiously and ethically.” She emphasizes that in a project like this, where AI’s inclusion is specifically tied to the artistic process and symbolizing a move into the AI era, its application is perfectly justified. She notes that currently, subtle AI-generated “flaws” serve as a crucial marker of quality, but the rapid evolution of AI prompts critical questions about a future where such distinctions vanish. “This is precisely why I strongly encourage our designers to explore AI,” Law adds, “it’s not just about using a new tool; it’s about understanding and shaping the next frontier of creativity.

The Collaborative Creative Process

The creation of this Borneo x Australian mural was a testament to a rigorous and highly collaborative design process. It began with extensive brainstorming, rough sketching, and visual experimentation. The designers recounted, “We each provided individual ideas and sketches before landing on the one that can deliver the message best… One raw idea was selected.”

This entire endeavor was a “collaborative project between two students and one advisor,” which “felt like a genuine partnership.” The designers expressed gratitude for the guidance received while being “given space to explore, exchange ideas, and experiment. Each of us brought different strengths to the table, and the process helped us learn from each other. It was a great experience and we learned so many valuable things along the way.”

A Lasting Impact

Ultimately, the designers hope the mural resonates deeply with everyone. “We hope that when people pass by this mural, they can feel the heart we put into it, and see that design isn’t about choosing between old and new, but about using whatever tools we have to bring good ideas to life.” This extraordinary Borneo x Australian mural stands as an inspiring beacon, inviting reflection on culture, community, resilience, and hope – defining elements of Swinburne’s spirit and a forward-looking glimpse into the future of creative design.

This Borneo x Australian mural is a vibrant visual narrative connecting Swinburne’s Sarawak and Melbourne campuses, featuring iconic Hornbill and Kangaroo against subtle maps, symbolising enduring cross-continental collaboration. Colourful panels showcase diverse academic fields with their specific tools, celebrating Swinburne’s youthful spirit. Crucially, the mural intentionally incorporates subtle AI-generated elements, not just to reflect the current “AI era” we are in, but also to prompt viewers to critically observe its current imperfections. This invites reflection on the evolving relationship between human creativity and technology, encouraging different perspectives on our shared future.

Hi, I’m Stephanie Wong, a multimedia designer with a love for visual storytelling in all its forms. Whether I’m designing, editing videos, or curating content for social media, I enjoy creating work that connects with people and sparks a feeling.

For the past four years, I’ve been freelancing on a range of creative projects, and earlier this year, I took a leap out of my comfort zone by joining a German AI tech company as a remote full-time designer. It’s been an exciting step into the European market, and a space where I’m constantly innovating, learning, and growing alongside cutting-edge technology.

Outside of work, I love making short videos just for fun, discovering new music, and finding inspiration in everyday moments. I’m always eager to explore new ideas, collaborate with others, and bring creativity into everything I do.
