Aims and learning outcomes

The aim of this unit is to introduce the techniques for establishing and maintaining control of an engineering project.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

  1. Describe the various forms of contract and project delivery mechanisms
  2. Describe and apply project administration requirements for prime contractors and sub-contractors –project meetings, project payments, project cost forecasting, contract variations, extensions of time
  3. Describe and apply the means and mechanisms of controlling project safety, quality, costs and schedules
  4. Formulate and/or specify suitable strategies, methods and tools/ techniques for project control

  • The nature of the construction industry
  • The phases of a project: Identification, planning, feasibility studies, preliminary engineering and detailed design phase, contracts and procurement phase, construction and commissioning phase (and parallel methods – FEED and FEL)
  • Control of project costs
  • Project programming and scheduling
  • Project Quality Control
  • Ensuring that safety comes first
