Aims and learning outcomes

This unit aims at introducing the concepts and tools of business intelligence and its role in decision making.

Students who successfully complete this Unit should be able to:

  1. Describe the concept of database systems and their tools
  2. Recognise the role of business intelligence in organizations.
  3. Explain the concept of data warehousing and online analytical processing OLAP.
  4. Identify the benefits, risks and issues related to the implementation of a business intelligence system in an organization.
  5. Identify the current Business Intelligence applications in the market
  6. Analyse and develop an organization’s Business Intelligence strategy that is aligned with business and IT strategies

Learning and teaching structures

Lecture (12 hours), Tutorial/ Laboratory (36 hours).

In a Semester, you should normally expect to spend, on average, twelve and a half hours of total time (formal contact time plus independent study time) a week on a 12.5 credit point unit of study.

Assessment

  1. Quizzes (Individual) 5% x 4 = 20%
  2. Assignment 1: case study (Group) 15%
  3. Assignment 2 (Individual) 15%
  4. Final exam (Individual) 50%

Minimum requirements to pass this unit of study

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

  • an aggregated mark of 50% or more, and
  • at least 40% in the final exam
