Aims and learning outcomes

This unit aims to provide students with mathematical knowledge of calculus. The knowledge gained and the problem-solving skills developed will prepare students for further undergraduate studies in applied science and engineering.

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

  1. Use the laws of indices and logarithms to solve exponential and logarithmic equations. Apply exponential and logarithmic functions in practical problems
  2. Apply circular functions, identify and sketch the graph of trigonometric functions and apply trigonometric identities, compound angles and multiple angle formula to solve trigonometric equations
  3. Evaluate the derivatives of polynomial, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. Demonstrate knowledge of differentiation incurve sketching, and kinematics
  4. Select the formulas and techniques of integration to evaluate indefinite integrals, RMS and Centroid
