Aims and learning outcomes

This unit aims to introduce students to the concepts of the law and legal systems, and to provide an understanding of the law-making processes and institutions, and to promote consideration and understanding of the role of law in society.

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamental concepts of law, and identify the legal systems and institutions that administer and enforce the law
  2. Explain and describe the roles of criminal law and civil law in society
  3. Distinguish between the effects of criminal law and civil law on the rights and obligations of the individual
