14th SUTS-IEM Evening Talk: “Some experiences from tunnelling through the soft rock of Kuching, Sarawak”

The 14th SUTS-IEM Evening Talk entitled “Some experiences from tunnelling through the soft rock of Kuching, Sarawak” was held on 15th July 2020 (Wednesday).

The fourth online evening talk was delivered via Microsoft Teams by Swinburne Sarawak staff Dr. Choo Chung Siung, who presented a topic closely related to his works.

The talk covered the use of trenchless method, or more specifically the microtunnelling by pipe-jacking method used in the construction of a 7.7 km long trunk sewer line as part of the Kuching Wastewater Management System (Phase 1).

During the 2-hour session, Dr. Choo shared the various experiences gained from the project, as well as the challenges of tunneling through the highly weathered Tuang Formation underlying the Kuching CBD.

A total of more than 140 participants was recorded during the session, which included industry practitioners, academicians and students. The general feedback of the event was also favourable with most participants preferring the current online delivery sessions.
