IChemE F&D SIG Roadshow

This Road Show was successfully held on 6th November 2021 (Saturday) from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm. There were engineering field students from Swinburne University Technology Sarawak (SUTS), IChemE student members, Dr. Elaine Yeu Yee Lee, Dr. How Bing Shen, Asso. Prof. Ir. Dr. Hii Ching Lik was the first invited speaker and Ts. Dr. Muhammad Heikal bin Ismail as the second invited speaker and other engineering field students from other universities.

This event was organised by SUTS IChemE Student Chapter, led by Dr. Elaine Yeu Yee Lee. The event’s objective is about the roles of chemical engineers in the food industry and food waste valorisation.

There were two speakers invited. The first speaker was Asso. Prof. Ir. Dr. Hii Ching Lik. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus. Also currently, he has been the Chair of the Food & Drink Special Interest Group for IChemE Malaysia since August 2020. Asso. Prof. Ir. Dr. Hii is a Chartered Member of IChemE (MIChemE), Chartered Engineer of the Engineering Council UK (CEng), Professional Engineer of Board of Engineers Malaysia (PEng) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK (FHEA). He introduced the F&D SIG and the roles of chemical engineering in the food industry, followed by another short session which is ‘get chartered’.

The second speaker was Ts. Dr. Muhammad Heikal bin Ismail. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is currently a committee member of IChemE Food and Drinks Special Interest Group. His research scopes include food waste valorisation, product dehydration, and 3D food printing. Ts. Dr. Muhammad Heikal bin Ismail gave a speech on Food waste valorisation and the impact of Movement Control Order (MCO) due to COVID– 19 on food waste generation with a case study in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

The event was started by Ainin Sofiya (Event coordinator of SUTS IChemE Student Chapter). She gave a short briefing on the speakers’ study backgrounds and achievements. Then the floor was passed to Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Hii Ching Lik to start on his talk. After the talk, there was a 5-minute break. The event then continued with the sharing by Ts. Dr. Muhammad Heikal bin Ismail. The event continues with Q&A sessions. A link was provided in the chatbox so that the students could ask questions anonymously. Most of the questions asked by students were about the benefits and job opportunities if we registered as a IChemE member, 3D printings and how food waste can be reduced. The event ended successfully with a photo session with all the audience participating actively.
