SUTS IChemE Student Chapter Committee 2021 formed

SUTS IChemE student chapter was formed on 4th March 2015, which is previously known as Chemical Engineering Club. IChemE Student Chapter serves as a platform for students to exchange their knowledge and communicate which each other on topics about chemical engineering. It can help the student with their current and future progress. As SUTS IChemE is a branch of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, with opportunities to collaborate with the regional IChemE thus helps to expose the students with benefits of different networking for an insight to the future of a chemical engineering graduate.

Solid club structures are the very foundations of a successful club whereas a dynamic and effective committee is important to drive a club forward.  Under the leadership of committees from IChemE Student Chapter, Swinburne Sarawak IChemE Student Chapter had earned the highly recommended award under the Student Chapter award category by Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Malaysia Awards 2020. The IChemE Malaysia Awards is an annual award that recognizes excellence and innovation of individuals and organizations in the field of chemical, biochemical and process engineering. The student chapter committees successfully organized numerous events in engaging the engineering community in Swinburne Sarawak while reaching out to the general community through engineering awareness and therefore successfully gained a spot for the prestigious award which recognizes the accomplishments of IChemE Student Chapters across Malaysia. Sincere gratitude was expressed to our club advisors on their patience in guiding the team to this achievement while highly appreciation was addressed to the exco members on their hard work paid off all these years in helping SUTS IChemE student chapter to grow.

Throughout the years, SUTS IChemE Student Chapter had put their effort in organizing industrial site visits, Engineering workshops, talks and webinars and internship sharing session. These events help to provide opportunities for members to explore all areas of chemical engineering. Due to the pandemic situation these days, SUTS IChemE Student Chapter managed to hold some virtual bridging sessions which discussed on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), Knovel Webinar, and basics of mathematical models for process design and decision-making. Meanwhile, SUTS IChemE Students Chapter also involved actively in the POPSIG University Roadshow held last year. This event mainly discussed on the palm oil industry sector and way to get chartered as an engineer.

This year, a variety of Chemical Engineering related activities has been planned and some were conducted. Before the commencement of Semester 1 2021, SUTS IChemE Student Chapter collaborate with Technological Association of Malaysia Swinburne Sarawak Student Section (TAM-SSSS) organised a talk on marine industries in Sarawak. Dr Renco Yong King Hua, the President of Sarawak Association of Marine Industries (SAMIN) was invited to deliver this fruitful talk. Participants had gained insight into the operation in marine industries. For example, five different marine industries in Sarawak which include boatbuilding, shipbuilding, maintenance and repair work, and marine engineering contracting for the oil and gas sector were discussed. under ship building and ship repair (SBSR) were introduced.

During the mid of Semester 1 2021, Mr Zachary from Sarawak Energy is invited to deliver a talk on Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification-Renewable Solar Energy.

Besides, SUTS IChemE Student Chapter acts as the co-organizer of BoChES Penultimate Year Prize 2021. This prize is intended for the Chemical Engineering student who contributes in their professional and public life. This event benefits the penultimate year students and acts as the reward and acknowledgement of their commitment to the profession, which include both chemical Engineering community and also general public.
