Webinars on the role of a Chemical Engineer in Industry

After the successful webinars in the 1st and the 2nd weeks of Semester Two 2020, the School of Chemical Engineering and Science organized another two webinars on the role of chemical engineer in industry during the first tuition week (semester break) where students have no learning and teaching activities. Our school invited Ir. Dr. Leong Wei Dong from Hytec Green Solutions Company and Eng. Savier Kong from Top Glove Corporation to share their professional experiences through MS Teams. Both guests have their first degree in Chemical Engineering.

In the first webinar, Ir. Dr. Leong shared with students the knowledge from his professional expertise and stressed on the role of a chemical engineer in industry. Using photos from industrial site, he highlighted his industry experience and responsibility as commissioning engineer, sales and application engineer, and energy engineer (design and operate combined heat and power equipment). He also shared his expert opinion on what industry is expected from fresh graduates and gave students tips to plan their career.  At the end of the talk, there was a good exchange between the students and our guest speakers. Students had their many questions answered and clearer vision on the role of chemical engineer in industry. Dr. Mahmoud Elhadi from the School of Chemical Engineering and Science delivered the introductory speech and passed the floor to Dr. Elaine Yeu from the same school to present the certificate of appreciation from our faculty dean to the guest speaker.

In the second webinar, Eng. Savier who has conducted several industrial projects of building new glove factories and revamping exiting ones in Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and China, shared with students the knowledge from his professional expertise and briefed them on new glove production plant setup that includes land acquisition, building setup, and glove machinery setup. Given his status as Swinburne Alumni, he shared with students a list of units that he learnt in Swinburne and aligned with his current career including process plant design, engineering management, fluid mechanics, environmental engineering, engineering professional, and engineering mathematics among others. Then, he highlighted the benefits and challenges that he has experienced as project engineer in tope Glove Company and gave students tips to become successful project engineers. The question and answer session went very well. Students had their many questions answered and clearer picture on the benefits, challenges and salary range of a project engineer in top Glove Company. Dr. Mahmoud Elhadi from the School of Chemical Engineering and Science delivered the introductory speech and presented a certificate of appreciation from our faculty dean to the guest speaker.
