294 Swinburne Sarawak Graduates Step Forward as Future Changemakers

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus marked a proud milestone as 294 graduates received their scrolls at the university’s graduation ceremony held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on 30 October 2025, celebrating their achievements and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

The ceremony saw 245 undergraduate degrees awarded across multiple disciplines, with 102 in business, 43 in computer science, 36 in engineering, 32 in design, 6 in information and communication technology, 9 in media and communication, 15 in science, and 2 with double degrees in Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Robotics and Mechatronics) and Bachelor of Computer Science. Nine Diploma of Business Management graduates were also awarded their qualifications.

Awards were also conferred upon 28 graduates who earned their master’s degrees. Twenty-one were from the Master of Business Administration (International), two from the Master of Business (Research), and one each from the Master of Construction Management, Master of Information Technology, Master of Engineering (Research), Master of Information and Communication Technologies (Research), and Master of Science (Research).

The university also celebrated 12 Doctor of Philosophy graduates who received their awards in business; engineering; humanities, arts and social sciences; information and communication technology; and science.

The momentous occasion reflected Swinburne Sarawak’s global reach, with graduates hailing from across Malaysia as well as Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Gabon, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Turkmenistan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. An additional 38 graduates received their awards in absentia during this graduation cycle.

Valedictorian Gavin Ng, graduating with a Bachelor of Computer Science, reflected fondly on his transformative experience at Swinburne Sarawak.

“My time at Swinburne Sarawak has been a rollercoaster of opportunities, challenges, and unforgettable friendships. All these experiences have helped me grow into the person I am today, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he said.

Sharing his thoughts on graduating, he remarked, “Graduation is a good time to pause and reflect on how much we’ve grown and to appreciate the people who have helped us become who we are today. It’s not just a celebration of our academic achievements but also a moment to express our gratitude to everyone who made this journey possible.”

He encouraged his fellow graduates to be open to new experiences and to never stop learning.

“Keep chasing your goals, stay humble, and give back whenever you can. Change is never easy – nor should it be – but it’s what helps you grow. Regardless of the end result, accept it for what it is, and remember that what matters most is how you choose to move forward. Build a life and become the kind of person who can look back with no regrets – one step at a time,” said Ng.

The ceremony was graced by the Sarawak Premier and Pro-Chancellor of Swinburne Sarawak, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, and presided over by Swinburne University of Technology Chancellor Professor John Pollaers OAM, with both presenting the awards to the graduates.

Also present were Professor Pascale Quester, Swinburne Vice-Chancellor and President; Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, Chairman of the Swinburne Sarawak Board of Directors; Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho, Swinburne Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer; Ms Sophie Horgan, Counsellor (Education and Research) at the Australian High Commission Malaysia, representing the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia; members of Swinburne Australia’s leadership and management team; as well as members of the Council, Board of Directors, and Executive Group of Swinburne Sarawak.

The graduation ceremony was also livestreamed on Swinburne Sarawak’s official YouTube channel, allowing families and friends to join in the celebration virtually.
