Explore the Free Tertiary Education Scheme and More at Swinburne’s Open Day on 11 April

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus will be holding its Open Day on 11 April 2026, welcoming students and parents to gain first-hand insights into the university’s academic offerings and opportunities, including the newly launched Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES).

The event will be held from 10am to 4pm at Swinburne Sarawak’s campus along Jalan Simpang Tiga. Members of the public, especially students who have completed their SPM, STPM, O-Level, A-Level, or UEC qualifications, are encouraged to attend to find out more about pursuing an affordable, world-class Australian tertiary education closer to home.

With the launch of FTES by the Sarawak government, the Open Day offers a prime opportunity for students and parents to familiarise themselves with the newly introduced scheme and address any enquiries they may have – from eligibility criteria to covered programs, additional benefits, and applications.

Starting this year, FTES opens doors for Sarawakian students to pursue higher education at Sarawak-owned institutions of higher learning, covering tuition fees for several approved undergraduate degree programs for students who meet the eligibility criteria. Twenty-two undergraduate degree courses at Swinburne Sarawak are approved for FTES, including a range of engineering programs, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology, Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology), Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Business (Accounting and Finance), and more.

In addition, FTES provides a monthly stipend for students from households with a monthly per capita income of RM1,500 or less to support their basic living expenses during their studies.

One of the highlights of the Open Day is a talk on FTES at 10:30am, presenting an overview of the scheme and how it supports eligible Sarawakian students in accessing quality Australian tertiary education with Swinburne Sarawak. The session aims to address key questions and provide clarity for students and parents regarding FTES.

At Swinburne Sarawak’s Open Day, visitors can consult directly with education counsellors and academic experts to gain insights into study pathways, programs, scholarships, and more. They will be able to discover what makes the Swinburne experience unique, including Work Integrated Learning, flexible exchange and transfer options, and a holistic campus environment.

Students and parents can learn more about Swinburne Sarawak’s diverse programs, spanning business, computing, design, engineering, quantity surveying, science, arts, media, and education. Through one-on-one consultations, students can better understand their options and identify pathways that align with their career aspirations. For those who are still undecided, a Career Personality Test is available, with education counsellors on hand to recommend suitable courses based on their interests.

Prospective students with an interest in STEM programs can take part in an engaging, hands-on showcase by the university’s Faculty of Engineering, Computing, and Science – designed to bring theory to life through interactive exhibits and real-world applications.

Representatives from Yayasan Sarawak and Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) will also be attending the Open Day, allowing visitors to get advice on scholarships, financial aid, and loans.

In addition, Universiti Malaya (UM) representatives will be present for consultations on their law program. Through a collaboration between both institutions, Swinburne Sarawak provides the venue and facilities for the delivery of UM’s law program.

While attending the event, prospective students can get a taste of the dynamic student life at Swinburne Sarawak by connecting with current students and the wider campus community. Through these interactions, they can gain valuable perspectives on their academic journey, extracurricular activities, and student support services. Visitors can also explore the campus through guided tours, getting a closer look at its facilities, teaching and learning spaces, and recreational areas.

Swinburne Sarawak will be accepting on-the-spot applications at the Open Day, and eligible students applying for admission will receive their Letter of Offer on the same day. For application purposes, prospective students are advised to bring a copy of their Malaysian identification card or a certified copy of their passport, as well as academic transcripts and certificates (SPM, STPM, UEC, O-Level, A-Level, and so on).

The university’s upcoming intake for its foundation programs begins on 27 April 2026, while the next intakes for its diploma and degree programs will commence on 22 June 2026 and 1 September 2026, respectively.
