Hands-On ICT Workshop Sparks Interest in AI and Creativity

KUCHING – In a step towards inspiring the next generation of digital innovators, the School of Information and Communication Technologies at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus organised a hands-on workshop an artificial intelligence (AI) and creativity at SMK St Joseph recently.

The workshop, attended by more than 60 Form 6 students, was part of the school’s orientation week and was organised in collaboration with Rakan Tutor, a non-profit organisation dedicated to making tech education accessible to students.

Led by Associate Professor Dr Miko Chang May Lee, Head of Swinburne Sarawak’s School of Information and Communication Technologies, the workshop gave the participants a first-hand look into the exciting world of artificial intelligence (AI) and its real-world applications in the creative industries. Designed to be hands-on and immersive, the session featured live demonstrations, engaging storytelling, and interactive examples that made AI relevant and inspiring for the pre-university participants.

Dr Chang also shared how AI is already reshaping the creative industry which includes animation, design, gaming and digital content creation. She also highlighted how Swinburne’s ICT program equips students with the technical skills and creative mindsets to thrive in this field.

According to Dr Chang, Swinburne continues to help students realise that tech careers are not just coders in laboratories.

“At Swinburne, our ICT program offers the perfect blend of theory, practice, and global perspective. Events such as these allow us to extend that learning beyond the campus and into the community,” she shared.

From AI-generated art to machine learning models used in music and storytelling, Swinburne students are encouraged to see how technology can be a tool for both problem-solving and self-expression.

The workshop also introduced Rakan Tutor’s Digital Platform on Discord, where the students can continue learning AI fundamentals and explore future-focused resources in a peer-supported environment. This access is part of the partnership’s vision to build future-ready capabilities across Sarawak and beyond.

The AI and Creativity workshop reflects Swinburne Sarawak’s broader mission to make future-focused education accessible and socially impactful. It also supported the university’s strategic goals of digital empowerment and community sustainability in STEM for Sarawakians.

By engaging the participants with emerging technologies, Swinburne and its partners ensure Sarawak’s future leaders are equipped not only with technical knowledge but also have the curiosity and confidence to shape Sarawak’s digital economy.

Its ICT programs position the Australian university as the leader in shaping adaptable, creative, and industry-ready graduates. Students enrolled in its ICT programs gain skills in cybersecurity, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and data science, among others, all while exploring how tech can drive innovation across diverse sectors.
