Professor John Wilson is Swinburne Sarawak’s new DVC and CEO

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus (Swinburne Sarawak) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor John Wilson as the university’s new Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Wilson said he has been working closely with the Sarawak campus for a number of years now and is pleased to be a part of its growth in an official capacity.

“In this position, I will continue the focus on delivering high-quality teaching and learning, industry-engaged research and preparing our graduates for careers of the future. Swinburne and the Sarawak state government share the same vision of a limitless digital economy and with the support of all our stakeholders, I’m very confident Swinburne will continue to be a source of innovation and empowerment for all,” said Professor Wilson.

Professor Wilson holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Monash University, a Master of Science from the University of California (Berkeley) and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. Combining his substantial experience in the academic field and more than a decade in industry as a consulting engineer, Professor Wilson focuses on teaching and research with real-world application.

Prior to joining Swinburne Sarawak, Professor Wilson was the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Strategy Implementation) and Executive Dean for the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.

Armed with extensive leadership experience in managing individual projects for clients in industry and managing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) faculty, Professor Wilson has demonstrated skills in strategic planning and business operations and performance, covering areas such as academic standards; financial management; people and change management; staffing and resourcing; and infrastructure management.  

As a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a Chartered and Registered Professional Engineer, his area of expertise includes structural systems, earthquake engineering and civil infrastructure.

Currently, Professor Wilson holds various professional designations as the Chair of the Australian Council of Engineering Deans; Chairman of Australia Standards BD/6/11 Earthquake Loading Standard; Committee Member of ACI 3017 – Chimney Earthquake Specialist; and Co-Editor of Australian Journal of Structural Engineering.

In the past, Professor Wilson was the Victorian Division Chairman of Engineers Australia; spokesperson for the Victorian Infrastructure Report Cards; Chairman of Judges for the Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards; and President of the Australian Earthquake Engineering Society.

He is the past joint recipient of four Chapman Medals, awarded by the Board of the College of Structural Engineers for the best paper in structural engineering, as well as one Warren Medal, an annual award presented by the Civil College of Engineers Australia for the best paper in the discipline of civil engineering.
