Roundtable discussion on issues facing entrepreneurs on 8 October

KUCHING – Entrepreneurs from Malaysia and Singapore will discuss the challenges in the corporate arena at a roundtable which will be held at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus on Wednesday, 8 October, 2014.

The roundtable discussion, “Breaking through the glass ceiling”, is open to members of the public. It will begin from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

The five panellists are Bloomberg TV Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Effendi Norwawi, WTS Konsultant Sdn Bhd managing director Ir. Alex Ting Kuang Kuo, Instacom Group Bhd executive director and CEO Anne Kung Soo Ching, Melolisa Foundation’s Barry Lim Sun Heng, and Serial System Ltd (Singapore) executive chairman and CEO Dr Derek Goh.

They will share their thoughts and experience on challenges such as barriers to the corporate ladder, balancing work and life, and entrepreneurship in general.

The roundtable will be moderated by Swinburne University of Technology Chancellor Graham Goldsmith, a highly-respected figure in the Australian financial services industry and an experienced company director and community leader with a deep commitment to education.

The panellists are some of the most renowned entrepreneurs. Effendi founded Encorp Bhd in 2000 and listed the company on the Main Board of the KLSE. It recently won the inaugural The Edge-PEPS Value Creation Excellence Awards 2010 (commercial category) for its “Encorp Strand” development project in Kota Damansara, Selangor.

Alex Ting is a professional engineer and a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia. He is a committee member of the Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and advisor to the Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association.

He was awarded Ahli Bintang Sarawak in 2006 and Johan Bintang Kenyalang in 2009.
A recipient of the 2013 Sarawak State Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Anne Kung has a law degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London. After practicing as a lawyer for four years in Kuching, she returned to London to obtain a chartered accountant qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Swinburne alumnus Barry Lim prides himself as an inventor and innovator. His experience in business and agriculture technologies span more than 40 years. He created Melolisa Foundation which his family funds, among others, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus students.

Singaporean Derek Goh founded his company as a sole proprietorship in 1988. Today, Serial System Ltd is a leading semiconductors/components distributor of active and passive components to original equipment manufacturers and sub-contracting businesses in the Asia Pacific region. It maintains one of the largest distribution networks with a portfolio of 7,000 customers in the region.
