Swinburne Sarawak academic appointed as member of ACCA Malaysia Advisory Committee

KUCHING – Associate Professor Dr Fung Chorng Yuan, Head of the School of Business at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, has been appointed as a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Malaysia Advisory Committee (ACCA MAC).

Dr Fung’s appointment is effective 1 September 2023 for a term of two years. Among the 12 members of the ACCA MAC, he is the only academic and the only East Malaysian. His appointment to be a voice in an international professional accounting body makes all East Malaysians, and particularly Sarawakians, proud.

The ACCA MAC plays an advisory role to the ACCA Malaysia team on non-operational matters related to their members and students.

Dr Fung has been a member of ACCA since 1996 as well as a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) Sarawak Regional Committee since 2018.

“I view this appointment as a recognition of my contributions to ACCA in higher education. Since being admitted as a member of ACCA in June 1996, I have been advocating the ACCA qualification to people around me. It has opened many doors of opportunity for me; in practice, industry and academia.

“With this appointment to the ACCA MAC, I believe my contribution to ACCA education is at a national level. I am happy to continue supporting ACCA through active participation in the MAC, bringing changes that will benefit the students and members of ACCA in Malaysia,” he said.

Dr Fung played a fundamental role in spearheading Swinburne Sarawak’s collaboration with ACCA in 2017, starting the ACCA Accelerate Program at the university. Swinburne Sarawak undergraduate students majoring in Accounting or Accounting and Finance can register for the university’s ACCA Accelerate Program and sit for the last four ACCA Strategic Professional Level papers during their second or third year of study. Many have benefitted from this program, graduating with their bachelor’s degree and ACCA qualification.

His contribution to the partnership between Swinburne Sarawak and ACCA has continued with the recent launch of the Swinburne-ACCA dual diploma, making Swinburne Sarawak the first university in East Malaysia offering this dual diploma. With this, Swinburne Sarawak’s Diploma of Accountancy students can now also opt for the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business qualification.
