Swinburne Sarawak and i-CATS Strengthen Research and Innovation Collaboration through MoU

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus and i-CATS University College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formalising a strategic partnership to advance research, talent development, and innovation in support of Sarawak’s growing knowledge economy.

Through the MoU, both universities aim to collaborate in academic programs including credit transfer arrangements, pursue joint research and innovation initiatives, and facilitate staff and student mobility between the two institutions.

The partnership brings together the complementary strengths of both institutions across a broad range of priority areas, including artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies, sustainable engineering and green technologies, advanced manufacturing and Industry 4.0, biodiversity and environmental sustainability, business innovation and the digital economy, education, as well as social innovation and community development.

One of the joint initiatives under this partnership is the Swinburne x i-CATS Global Master Class Series, which brings together internationally recognised academics, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers from Swinburne Melbourne and Sarawak campuses to deliver world-class master classes that address emerging global challenges and industry trends.

The Master Class Series will enhance international learning opportunities, strengthen Australia-Malaysia academic collaboration, foster joint research and innovation, and deepen engagement between universities, industry, and government. It will also reinforce Swinburne’s commitment to delivering globally connected education while expanding its strategic partnership with i-CATS to develop future-ready graduates for Sarawak and the broader region.

The MoU signing ceremony was held at Swinburne Sarawak on 8 July 2026, with Swinburne Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho and i-CATS Vice Chancellor Professor Emeritus Datuk Ts Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi signing on behalf of their respective institutions.

In his remarks, Professor Emeritus Datuk Ts Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi highlighted the successful implementation of the Notification of Credit Recognition (NOCR) arrangement between i-CATS and Swinburne Sarawak, which facilitates academic progression and credit transfer in Business, Design, Engineering, and Computing programs. He said this demonstrated what can be achieved when institutions work together with a shared commitment to student success.

“We are confident that our partnership will continue to grow in depth and impact. By working together, i-CATS and Swinburne Sarawak can play an even greater role in developing future-ready talent, advancing knowledge, and supporting Sarawak’s aspirations for sustainable growth and a vibrant higher education system,” he said.

Ir Professor Lau Hieng Ho said the MoU reflected both institutions’ shared commitment to strengthening higher education and research impact through sustained collaboration while creating greater value for students, staff, and the wider community.

“At Swinburne, we firmly believe that meaningful partnerships are built on a shared vision, mutual trust, and a commitment to creating lasting impact. By combining our respective strengths and expertise, we can foster greater knowledge exchange, drive innovation, enrich staff and student experiences, and contribute solutions that address the needs of industry and society,” he said.

The priorities under the MoU align closely with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, particularly its goals for the digital economy, the green economy, innovation, talent development, and sustainable development, providing a clear framework for the partnership’s contributions to the state’s long-term growth.

The partnership between Swinburne Sarawak and i-CATS reflects both institutions’ shared commitment to advancing higher education, research excellence, and innovation, while developing future-ready talent and contributing to Sarawak’s vision of becoming a leading hub for knowledge, technology, and sustainable development.
