Swinburne Sarawak and WAK 2022 to host inaugural Cultural Entrepreneurship Factory 2022

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus in collaboration with What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2022 are organising the inaugural Cultural Entrepreneurship Factory (CEF) 2022 event, which will take place on 21 and 22 October 2022 at Swinburne Sarawak and The Waterfront Hotel Kuching.

Themed ‘Heritage and Technology: Preserving Through Creative Industry’, CEF 2022 aims to showcase and celebrate local and regional researchers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, industry and government bodies in the cultural entrepreneurship discipline. It focuses on the richness of the diverse regional cultural heritage in the South East Asia context, particularly in Borneo.

Elements of unique and diverse culture and heritage are fused and embedded in various contemporary creative outcomes, including digital games, animation, film, fashion, packaging and music. Those fields provide researchers, practitioners and the local creative industry a platform to safeguard, preserve, communicate and elevate our culture and heritage, focusing on voices and representations from the local creative communities in Sarawak.

On the first day of CEF 2022, keynote addresses and plenary sessions will be held with local and international creative industry experts and academicians at Swinburne Sarawak. Professor Khoa Do and Noor Irwan Junaidy will deliver their keynote addresses, while Neng Kho Razali, Aurelia Liu and Suan Goh will share their views on the preservation of culture through fashion, exhibitions and digital interactive outcomes in the plenary discussion.

The second day of CEF 2022 will shift the focus to workshops on transforming cultural stories into animation IP with Gregory Wee, Noor Irwan Junaidy and Ayie Ibrahim at the newly launched design studio, The Hive, at Swinburne Sarawak. Meanwhile, plenary sessions will be held at The Waterfront Hotel, featuring Neng Kho Razali, Heidi Munan, Sylvester Wielding Jussem, Ashly Nandong, Gerald Goh and Leonard Siaw, who will share about their crafts and journeys in navigating the challenges and opportunities in the creative industry.

The CEF 2022 Organising Committee invites university students, academicians, researchers and practitioners from the creative industry to join the two-day event. Interested parties are also invited to come on board as event sponsors and exhibitors to promote their culture-related crafts and services to a broader audience during CEF 2022.

CEF 2022 is sponsored by Business Events Sarawak (Sarawak Convention Bureau).
