Swinburne Sarawak Design Student Excels at Sarawak Youth Talent 2025

KUCHING – A Multimedia Design student from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus has earned one of the five highly competitive Outstanding Awards at the Sarawak Youth Talent (SYT) 2025 TikTok Video Competition – a proud achievement that highlights the strength of Swinburne Sarawak’s Multimedia Design program and the university’s commitment to real-world, sustainability-focused learning.

The SYT 2025 TikTok Video Competition, organised by Responsible Borneo (REBORN), centred on the timely theme of “Responsible Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”. The event attracted over 100 video submissions, including international entries from East Asia Inter-Regional Tourism Federation (EATOF) member countries. The panel of 18 judges – 10 of whom were international experts from 8 nations including Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom – ensured a globally benchmarked judging process.

Swinburne Sarawak’s Multimedia Design student Aisya Syahmina Binti Zailani received the Outstanding Award at an award presentation ceremony on 11 October 2025 for her video entry titled “Are You a Responsible Traveller?” This remarkable feat placed her entry in the top 5% of all submissions received, earning her a cash prize of RM1,500. Her submission was directly linked to the Digital Video Compositing unit requirements in her program.

Reflecting on her achievement, Aisya said, “Creating a video that champions responsible tourism was truly rewarding, especially since the theme is so relevant to Sarawak. Winning is fantastic, but the best part was seeing my university work have a real impact on a major public campaign. It showed me the power of design in promoting sustainability.”

The success story is part of a larger, integrated industry partnership initiated by design lecturer Eunice Law. The collaboration with SYT was strategically woven across two distinct units of learning, ensuring students gained broad, multi-platform professional exposure. In the Digital Video Compositing unit, students focused on creating their video entries for the competition, while the Typography for Print and Interactive Publication unit tasked them with designing the official event booklet and website.

Through this comprehensive project, students gained valuable experience managing multiple deliverables across video, print, and digital platforms to communicate a critical message to a broad audience. These materials served as key informational tools distributed to event stakeholders, international delegates, and the public, helping to educate and reinforce the principles of responsible tourism across Sarawak and the wider region.

“This collaboration with REBORN was a genuine test of professional capability. Our students weren’t just completing one assignment; they were managing three separate deliverables – video, print, and web design – all while hitting assessment rubrics. This is the definition of authentic learning, giving them a portfolio that stands up to the demands of the real world,” said Law.

This collaboration underscores Swinburne Sarawak’s commitment to delivering industry-relevant education that equips graduates to contribute meaningfully to both local and global communities.

The project’s wide scope was made possible with the support of numerous key government bodies, international federations, and industry partners, including the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak and EATOF.
