Swinburne Sarawak donates school items to children centre

KUCHING – In conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan, staff of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus visited Baiturrahman Hidayah Centre IKRAM (BHCI) bearing gifts and duit raya.

The group were led by Esty Sharkawi, Student Services Manager who was accompanied by several staff from the university’s Student Operations and, Marketing Services and Communications Unit.

In keeping with the spirit of giving and sharing during the holy month, Swinburne Sarawak donated about RM1,500 worth of goods namely groceries and school stationeries. The children were also presented with duit raya in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Abdul Rahman bin Hassan, an exco member of BHCI accepted the donation on behalf of the centre.

“We hope to raise awareness among our students and staff on the need to help the less fortunate. And to give back to the community whenever we can,’’ said Esty. For that reason, we hope that this simple gathering can boost the mood of the children so they too feel the joy and happiness of Hari Raya, she added.

Esty also mentioned that the University is in talks with the centre in offering basic IT learning course for the children at the centre as part of its Swinburne Emerging Leadership Program.

Baiturrahman Hidayah Centre IKRAM was established in 2012 and currently houses 17 children between the ages of eight to 15 years. The centre operates on public donations and is located in Petra Jaya.
