Swinburne Sarawak researcher appointed UNESCO-ICUA Fellow

KUCHING – Dr James Loi Chun Han, a researcher and academician at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, has been appointed as a Fellow of the International Centre for UNESCO ASPnet (ICUA).

The UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) connects nearly 10,000 schools in 180 countries around a common goal: to build peace in the minds of children and young people.

Through concrete actions, member schools promote the ideals of UNESCO – valuing rights and dignity, gender equality, social progress, freedom, justice and democracy, respect for diversity, and international solidarity.

The network operates at international and national levels, with three clear priorities: education for sustainable development, global citizenship education, and intercultural and heritage learning.

The ICUA, based in Sanya, China, is an integral part of the UNESCO framework. As a UNESCO centre, ICUA serves as a bridge for communication and cooperation, participating in UNESCO’s work through knowledge production, capacity building, technical support, and information sharing. It contributes to achieving “Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education”, as part of the Education 2030 agenda.

This is not Dr Loi’s first involvement with UNESCO. In 2024, he was one of only 30 invited experts – and the sole representative from the Southeast Asia region – to participate in UNESCO’s International Policy Forum on Private Supplementary Tutoring, held at its headquarters in Paris.

Furthermore, Dr Loi is also among the 12 inaugural members of UNESCO’s Community of Practice (CoP) on Private Supplementary Tutoring. The CoP, comprising international members, meets regularly to discuss and formulate recommendations to policymakers, in addition to coordinating global research collaborations.

“It is truly a humbling experience to be appointed as a UNESCO-ICUA Fellow. I am grateful for the opportunity to play my part in supporting UNESCO’s goal of making inclusive and equitable quality education for all a reality,” said Dr Loi.
