Swinburne Sarawak’s parking facility at Kenyalang Park closes

KUCHING – Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus has closed its alternative parking facility due to the poor response.

Located next to the Kenyalang Park post office, the parking lot was was opened in July and closed on 31 September this year.

“In the first two weeks (of opening) we recorded no more than five cars,” said Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen who is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak.

“This eventually dropped to zero in the following weeks up to the day it was closed,” he said, adding that this was despite the fact that no fees were imposed on those who might have chosen to utilise the facility.

“All they needed to do was to produce their student or staff ID.”

Lueckenhausen said that the university had put in place all necessary features to ensure the security of the vehicles and convenience of users: guards were stationed at the entrance and exit and a shuttle service to and from the campus was provided, also free of charge.

The parking lot, which can accommodate about 80 vehicles and is located within a short distance of the university, was provided as an alternative after the university implemented a system to manage parking on campus which requires payment.
