Student Achievement - Grant Scholarship

Friday 29 October 2021

Heartiest congratulations to Mr. Frederick Phang Jit Fook on receiving a Scholarship under Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) from the Ministry of Education (MOE) for the project entitled "Reaction mechanism of acid-based catalytic wet torrefaction on oil palm trunks and empty fruit bunches".

The project, which is led by Dr. Chew Jiuan Jing and Assoc. Prof. Jaka Sunarso, involves close collaborations with Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Centre for Biofuel and Biochemical Research and Malaysian Palm Oil Board. In this RM147,000-worth project, Frederick evaluates the effect of acid-based catalysts on the product properties during wet torrefaction of oil palm trunk (OPT) and empty fruit bunch (EFB). The outcome of the project will provide insights into the effect of catalyst addition on the reaction mechanisms and properties of wet torrefied OPT and EFB.

This project aligns with Moonshot 3 - Every Swinburne partner gets a tech solution as Swinburne researchers generate an innovative solution for waste management issues in the oil palm industry and other agricultural sectors.

The project also aligns with Moonshot 4 - Swinburne is the prototype of global best practice since the outcome of the project will contribute to the Nation's energy security in reducing the dependence on foreign fossil fuel supplies. The use of bio-fuel from oil palm biomass will also contribute to the Nation's commitment under Paris Agreement in reducing the carbon footprint.

We wish you success in your research endeavours.
